It's not good for EVERY body. I've been reading in Dr. Amen's

books that an amino acid imbalance can trigger obsessive compulsive

disorder in those who are overactive in the cingulate or basal ganglia

parts of the brain. Most kids with asperger's have some OCD going on

already, and taking out too many carbs because of yeast or phenol

issues can upset the amino acid ratio and tip the balance to a

diagnosable disorder.

Searching on amino acids then led me to Dr. Amy Yasko, ND, PhD, whose

approach to autism is to remove neurological excitotoxin triggers from

the diet. Excitotoxins are neurotransmitters such as glutamate (Yes,

that's glutamine) or aspartate that can exite the nerves to death when

their levels are not regulated properly. Excess exitotoxins cause an

imbalance in the flow of calcium, which leads to a complex

inflammatory cascade and release of inflammatory mediators. Foods or

supplements that contain excitotoxins include MSG, glutamic acid,

glutamine, nutrasweet, aspartate, aspartame, and cysteine. Very high

levels are found in wheat gluten and high amounts in milk casein.

Mercury and aluminum can also serve to trigger glutamate release.

Glutamate is the precursor to GABA, a calming neurotransmitter

essential for speech. When glutamine builds up due to regulatory

malfunction, the brain removes it with oxygen and energy. However,

glutamate release leads to insulin release, which lowers glucose

levels. A drop in glucose disrupts the glutamate removal process.

Excess glutamate depletes glutathione, one of the most powerful

antioxidants found in the body, which helps to protect neurons from

damage.

Glutamate binds to NMDA receptors in the brain, which is tied to

calcium transport. When glutamate is excessive, calcium flows into

the neurons in a major way. Excess calcium makes it impossible for

the neurons to rest--they fire without stopping, causing the release

of inflammatory mediators, the release of more glutamate, thus

resulting in more calcium influx. Magnesium modulates the calcium flow.

Dr. Yasko says there are several underlying factors that may

predispose certain individuals to autistic type neurological

inflammation, including blood type O (and type A), early recurrent

Strep infections, excess stomach acid, early multiple vaccinations,

and well above average intelligence. There may also be a correlation

with a family history of liver disfunction, vit. K deficiency, acid

reflux, and autoimmune problems. She has found the need to address

chronic viral, bacterial, and yeast infections in the body (which can

generate release of additional inflammatory mediators), to balance the

acid/alkaline ratio and restore normal flora to the gut, and to deal

with metal toxicity (which also generates excitotoxin damage).

Any errors in paraphrasing are mine. For the full paper, go to

Sounds like a great argument for the support of SCD.

Hi :

You should check out www.autismanswer.com before starting glutamine

supplementation if there is autism in the picture. It is hypothesized to be one

of the " excitotoxins " that Dr. Amy Yasko warns about.

Thanks,

Hong (mum to Mimi, 7, ASD)
