Guest guest
hair loss 3 months after RAI? Ideas please I have read about Hypo hairloss but has anyone any info on hairloss 3 months after RAI? My hair has always been the bane of my existence - very fine, very THIN - I have to use pony tail holders for children as they are the only ones that fit (wrapped 2 or 3 times around the paltry gathering of hair). Now (starting last week) it is really falling out - a few weeks of this and I fear I will be bald. Is it possibly hypo related? synthroid related? or can it only be Although drug induced hair loss (alopecia) is a possibility, it is rare with thyroid chemoablative (RAI) or replacement therapies (Synthroid, etc.). The type of hair loss you are experiencing is an important physical finding in determining the cause. If you are noting a sudden, diffuse, rather than patchy scalp only hair loss approximatly 4 months after TT and perhaps ?6 months after diagnosis, a condition called Telogen Effluvium (TE) might be the culprit. This is the same thing that frequently occurs approximatly 6 months after childbirth YMMV (in women), severe physical (cancer, high fever, etc.) or emotional stress and is often of a precipitous and dramatic nature. Regrowth to pre TE levels is the case in the overwhelming number of cases. Taking care to avoid traction (pulling on the fragile hair roots) while this several month process of regrowth is occurring is important. So, things like scrungies and tightly wrapped buns, held in place with pins, etc. are probably not advisable. basically TE wants to be left alone-use a conditioner after shampooing (around 2X/week is the goal) to minimize tangling and therefore traction. Proper diagnosis and treatment are, of course, essential. There are many other causes of hair loss and you may even have a combination of different causes. At any rate, if your PHYSICIAN is not comfortable with the differential diagnosis of hair loss, you might ask to see a dermatologist-especially one who has special interest alopecia (hair loss). Thank you very much Fury 08/12 - TT 09/24 - RAI 10/03/02 - started .150 Synthroid; Joan Weston, FL
Guest guest
Hi, I'm having the same problems as you but it is a constant thing not during hypo. I normally have very thin hair so I worry alot about losing all my hair. After taking a shower about 3 or 4 time there is hair stuck in the drain. It has gotten better since I was last Hypo but still have hair lose. That is all I can tell you. buhbye Age 21 11/00 TT 1/01 RAI 10/01 Rad. Guest guest
This might not have anything to do with anything, but just to put my 2 cents worth in... I was hyper (3x too much cytomel) then immediately hypo for a scan between Aug and the end of Oct. For the first time, I didn't lose hair on my hair, but I did lose the exterior 1/3 of my eyebrows and the interior 1/3 of my eyelashes. (weird, I know!) I am still currently going through what I lovingly call hormonally challenged hair, which is constant changes in my hair color, texture and fullness that I go through for MONTHS after being back on meds. On the up side, I have found that in the past, a common thread is that I keep losing all my gray hair until about 4 months back on meds (then it returns to normal). To me it's all in the outlook... I have learned to enjoy the suspense and amazement of " what I am going to look like this week " when I look in the mirror. I have had both my mother and roommate accuse me of dying my hair to get rid of my gray <laughing> like I would BOTHER.... but it's fun to suddenly look so much younger after months of looking so much older being hypo!
