The question was, what is EMS. EMS is responding when someone call for

you. You are there to assist them with whatever their crisis is. If all

of your calls were crap then you may have an issue. Chances are they are

not and only a few are. Deal with them and get your butt back to work

doing what you are supposed to do. Pick up people when you are called.

Its simple just do it and quit bitching.

For a variety of reasons, I have pretty much stayed out of this one...

However, I have forwarded this letter to the primary instructor for the

classes at the VoTech where I am the medical director. We've used various

methods

over the years to make sure that the students understand from the start of

classes that most of the work that they will do in their career will be

transfers....with varying success.

I've suggested that the new students at least read and discuss the

material...if not have them copy it long hand first!

Henry,

I am going to print this out and give it to all of my beginning

paramedic students, stapled to the EMT Oath. I tell them this the first

day but not as eloquently.

Get your flare guns out and aim them south. It appears to me that all

of

this rabble about transfers vs emergencies vs wheel chair vans vs cpr

guys and first aid this and let me be available only for the

emergencies

bla bla bla all boils down to I just don't want to do it. How do you

think those emergencies services are funded. Emergency calls don't pay

squat. The transfer services get the gravy paying patients that they

can

pick and choose and the emergency services get the non pay more fun

type

calls that are emergency. Oh boy I am a para-god so I shouldn't have

to

deal with the elderly, the poor, the infirm or the folks that call me

thinking it is an emergency but does not live up to godly idea of what

a

true emergency is.

If you want a real EMS service get rid of all the non-emergency

transport services that can pick and choose only the paying patients

and

implement services where they absolutely do both. Teach your medics

that

this business is not all gravy and that no one is beneath them. All of

these patients deserve the same care, attention and respect.

My response to that diatribe is simply " Let the Police protect and SERVE " .

Better yet, let the fire department go back to rescuing helpless kittens who

have gotten themselves stuck up a tree. I could use a coffee... Maybe I

should call EMS.

Forgive me...

Henry's words will now be required in all state EMS courses (we should appeal to

DSHS to make this happen).

And badly behaved EMT's will also have to write on the blackboard 1000 times

" it's their emergency - not mine " , " it's their emergency - not mine " , " it's

their emergency - not mine " ...........
