Guest guest
Hi Chad, ANA can indicate many diseases. My daughter's hearing loss is caused by Cogan's syndrome which is a very rare auto-immune disease. Amazingly enough even though she has all the sign of the disease she has never had positive blood tests. In her case she also had initially normal hearing in one ear and had a fairly rapid loss. Her speech is normal. She was treated with prednisone, and whenever she goes on it she has an improvement in her hearing. She was treated for a long time with the drug. The problem with prednisone is it is not a good long term medication because of the amount of side effects. It would definitely be worth trying to see if it does help though. My daughter is currently on methlytrexate. Another immunosuppressent with alot of side effects, but supposedly less than prednisone. Luckily so far she has tolerated both medications well. I have to say a recent study showed that methyltrexate is ineffective in treating auto-immune hearing loss, we actually go back to the doctors tomorrow to see if it is worth keeping her on it. I hope some of this helps.

Guest guest
Chad, I've been wondering how you're doing. I am not a big fan of HEI since they turned my Hayley down for an implant...but I would call House Ear Institute in Los Angeles. http://www.hei.org/ I would think that if anybody could help, that they would be cutting edge. In the meantime, I would make sure your daughter gets an IEP with speech therapy. I say this because she didn't always have hearing loss, and you want to ensure she retains the speech skills she had prior to losing her hearing. Very best wishes to you, > >Reply-To: Listen-Up >To: <Listen-Up > >Subject: Sensorineural Hearing Loss & Positive ANA Screen Test >Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2004 13:13:32 -0600 > >My 5 yr old daughter has moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss >and just got her hearing aids last week. Guest guest
Chad, I don't know about ANA. I just wanted to say I'm sorry that you have to go through this, but it's great they found something that may have caused her hearing loss and that her language is good, that will help a lot as far as accomidating for her loss. I hope her aids are a big help. Sensorineural Hearing Loss & Positive ANA Screen Test My 5 yr old daughter has moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss and just got her hearing aids last week. Our doctor ordered a lot of blood tests and one of the tests that came back positive was the ANA (Anti-Nuclear Antibody) screen. I have done a little bit of research on the internet today on ANA screen and a lot of articles came up on Sudden Sensorneural Hearing Loss and treatment with corticosteroids. We do not know how she lost her hearing and we think it has been recent because of very good speech development. Does anyone have any information on the ANA screen and sensorineural hearing loss? Has anyone read about responsiveness to corticosteroid treatment? Thank you. Chad
