About the CHARGE workshop. We are in Dallas and my CHARGEr is 8 mos. old. I

contacted Larry immediately because we would like to attend. However, after

reading a little more about the workshop though it seems as if it is for

school age CHARGErs. Can anyone tell me if it would be worth making the trip

for us. We have the miles to get out there so the cost is not an issue and I

am excited about attending something CHARGE related!!!!! But I don't know if

it would benefit enough for me to justify dragging my baby out of state for.

Can someone with more info give us some insight to help us make this

decision?

Thanks,

mom to 8 month CHaRGEr.

I really want Meg to chime in on this. My thoughts are kind of conflicting.

On the one hand, I think the discussion will be geared towards school age

and young adults so will not be directly applicable to . You won't go

home with a " to do " list. He's so young that it will be hard to which

information will apply to him in the future. So it could be a royal waste

of time.

On the other hand, if you have the time and miles to spare and the workshop

is not full, it would be a " heads up " of things to think about as gets

older. You'll be making preschool decisions in 2 years -- that time will

fly! For this purpose, you wouldn't necessarily need a whole team and you

certainly wouldn't need himself. The session is for school teams --

not the children. One of you could come just as an observer and

information-gatherer.

I know that my experience with older CHARGErs has been invaluable in looking

towards Aubrie's future. For example, I would not have thought of the need

for cane travel because she has one fairly good eye -- but I have seen

others with similar vision who greatly benefit from it. Now I am prepared,

as is her school team, to introduce her to the cane soon so she'll develop

good independence traveling in unfamiliar areas. Another example, we began

teaching Aubrie sign again this year. It's slow-going and not exactly as

I'd like it, but it's a start. The idea is that Aubrie is likely to need a

sign interpreter in jr hi and high school lecture classes in order to get

all the info. Even with decent hearing, lots of adults with CHARGE use an

interpreter so that they really get all the info between the visual and

auditory. Relying on auditory alone, they miss some of it.

In the educational area, there is so much to consider! The more we can

learn from others' experiences, the better. We do not want to have each of

us reinventing the wheel all over the country!

That said, it is a long way to travel, is awfully young, and maybe the

training will be filled with MO teams. So -- I don't really know the right

answer for you -- just offering some conflicting thoughts to help confuse

the matter :-)

Thank you for helping me with my decision to attend the conference. I

discussed with my husband and we decided that as difficult as it is to pass

up any chance to learn as much about CHARGE as possible it would be in our

best interest for me to not go to the conference. I guess I was just so

excited to be in a CHARGE environment, but what it comes down to is that we

have 3 children so I would have left the older 2 with my hisband, and I

can't leave (my little CHARGER) because I am his primary caregiver and

I can't imagine being so far away from him right now. Also since the

information is more geared toward 3 and over with CHARGE I suppose we should

just wait untill the 2007 conference. Thanks for helping us make this

decision.

I think you made a wise choice. I know how hard it is to pass up

opportunities, but I think you're right to wait on this one!

Here's a link for the info. It says the registration deadline is April 14,

but I'm not sure that it's really too late. If you live close enough and

think your school would consider attending, it's worth a call to Larry

to see about attending. I haven't heard the status of enrollment so

far.
