Guest guest
Crystal, Since Eva is chewing on her fingers, she is probably teething and her gums are sore and could even be painful. Her hitting her head could be an indication of that. Whenever Jeff starts hitting his head, or biting his fingers, it is usually because of a dental problem or pain elsewhere. Guest guest
Crystal, also does this whenever she is in pain, stressed out or simply when she needs input. She just about ripped all of her hair out, so now when I see her doing this, I just gently tap her skull and gently tug her hair, this has seemed to help. I would watch Eva's body language and see if she is experiencing pain, or if she seems stressed out, see if it happens after certain situations, certain times of day, (such as bedtime) this may help clue you in as to why she is doing this type of behavior. However, Eva is very young and this could be an indicator that a painful medical issue is present,so you may need to see the Dr. on this one. Otherwise, try the skull tapping and see if this helps. n-mom to 3yrs. Guest guest
Crystal Amelie used to do this in the first couple of months but has stopped, her consultant said that M.S.I. children with vision issues do occasionally behave like this, the banging and pulling giives them a feeling, like as a stimulus, they get vibration from it, she would also poke her eye because if you have ever done this yourself, by accident you get that bright kind of light , or at least i have, so again they maybe see something more by doing this, as Amelie's vision has slightly inproved she doesnt appear to need to do this anymore. When she does knock or bang her head occasionally it makes her laugh lots where as norm kids may cry she loves the buzz from a knock!. just a thought could be a load of poop of course, you know me newish charge mum and all!!! love Lesley x > Lately Eva has been hitting herself in the head with her fist and > pulling her own hair. Guest guest
I think they need that specific type of input more than just " sensory stimulation " - I use a partially deflated nobbie gertie ball to play with Dylan on his head when he starts hitting his head - that way it honors his need for input, but diverts the head hitting, which could develop into a nasty pattern. I also agree that changes physically can increase the need to hit the forehead - ear changes, sinus changes. And note the head banging for input is far different than when he indicates he is frustrated Kim > Crystal > > Amelie used to do this in the first couple of months but has > stopped, her consultant said that M.S.I. children with vision issues > do occasionally behave like this, the banging and pulling giives > them a feeling, like as a stimulus, they get vibration from it, she > would also poke her eye because if you have ever done this yourself, > by accident you get that bright kind of light , or at least i have, > so again they maybe see something more by doing this, as Amelie's > vision has slightly inproved she doesnt appear to need to do this > anymore. Guest guest
What Lesley mentioned is called a phosphene. Kids with very poor (or no) vision will poke at their eye's to produce the phosphenes for visual stimulation. That's why blind children will often have a sunken in appearance to their eyes, so if you can it's best to discourage them doing this (for cosmetic purposes, and on the chance they would poke the eyeball itself hard enough to cause an abrasion which could become infected).
