So this is my bad. I've been skimming through all the cyclic

vomiting/gtube/fundo emails--and deleting them because I didn't think it applied

to us. And it just dawned on me that it is probably what is going on with Evan.

Evan has a g-tube/fundo done at 2 months. The procedures were a God-send,

because he had bad reflux (he would throw-up if you looked at him the wrong way)

and wasn't gaining weight at all really. He also had frequent desats, and this

improved dramatically after the Nissen was done.

For the past 3 months or so, he wakes up like clock-work between 4:30 and 5:00

am. He will make grunting and gagging noises. At first we thought it was

related to his pooping, because that happens around 6 am most of the time. We

vent his g-tube, (usually there is gas bubbles) and after that he will calm

down--not go back to sleep, but just lay there quietly. I hadn't really thought

of it as vomiting, because he can't really.

Does this sound like cyclic vomiting to all the experts?

- When Dylan has it, the retching and venting of the tube occur in

waves, along with extreme paleness, cold, clammy skin, slow heart rate (when

it is monitored) then going limp until the next wave. Does that fit with

what Evan is doing? His was not cyclical about time of day when it

occurred, although I think 's was. Dylan has had a fundo, has

not, so go figure.

woke up at 6:30 am wretching and/or vomiting.....every morning no matter

what we did. Imipramine (medicine) prescribed by the neurologist has saved

her! She also had 7-10 day vomiting cycles as well. I'll try to forward you a

detailed e-mail tomorrow.

Strange huh!

That doesn't so much fit with Evan. He will get real red in the face, along

with the gagging (and sometimes choking). We try to suction what the gagging

brings up, and this triggers a whole other wave of the gagging...a viscous

cycle.

Our pediatrician recommended giving him some apple-pear juice to thin out his

BM. I couldn't find apple-pear, so we gave him 1 1/2 oz of 100% apple juice.

That worked to make him less constipated, and this morning he didn't wake up at

an ungodly hour grunting and gagging (he actually slept through to 6 am!). So

maybe it was related to pooping and is not cyclic vomiting. Thanks for the

information though--I will still keep it in the back of my mind.

It really is--not that it sounds like the rest of the day is much better. Is it

the same every single day?

I've decided that Evan's gagging and barfing is just karma getting me back. I

have (or I should say " had " because I've toughened up over the past 8 months) a

huge vomiting phobia. I actually ran out on one of my patients one time that

started throwing-up (if you are wondering what an optometrist could possibly do

to a patient to make them sick...it's not a typical procedure)...there was

another Dr. in the room so the patient still had some moral support. I was

teased for months about that! My mom used to laugh and say it was going to be

the true test of my marriage if ever got sick (knock on wood--we've know

each other for almost 4 years and it hasn't happened yet).

Anyhow, should just count her blessings that you are her mother and not

me!

That is so funny that you say that about the vomiting! I have (or had!)

horrible " nose " nausea - I was always the one with the Kleenex wiping every

kid's nose - I even threw up after wiping my nephew's nose when I was pregnant.

has choanal atresia and had a trach - she has horrible nose ick and it is

a more than daily job for me to flush, wipe, monitor, etc.! My friend teases me

about it!

I'm just wondering for those of you who have kids with this issue,

when did it start? Is this something that they've always had or did

it begin at a certain age/stage? Just curious. Sounds like a very

tough thing to endure for you and your little ones!
