Guest guest
Kim - I certainly could have mis-spoken about the growth and the retina! Michele- The child I mentioned who has such success with the occuvite is tube fed. They worked with their doctor to come up with the correct dose to grind up and put in the formula. They also grind up spinach and give her measured portions 2xday so she receives Mother Natures brand of Lutein! Since the Ocuvite is marketed to the older population to help avoud macular degeneration, I don't think they provide a children's dose. Guest guest
That's what I was afraid of. Sometimes I wish we still had a Gtube just for supplements that are so nasty tasting. I can't get Omega 3s down her -- and certainly wouldn't get Ocuvite or lots of spinach in her daily. Guest guest
Michele - did you try the omega brite capsules? They are the least fishy tasting I have found. Kim > That's what I was afraid of. Guest guest
I have not tried that particular brand. We need NO-fish-taste or else it's not gonna work. Even just the oily texture is gross enough to keep her from accepting it. This kid has so much to deal with that I just can't force something gross down her throat every day if it's not absolutely necessary. So I guess I'm biding my time til she can swallow or something. Guest guest
No, it doesn't. And I am very interested to know the details in this case. What exactly is meant by " success " ? Ocuvite Preservision is a vitamin formulation used to help slow the progression of age- related macular degeneration. It's not a cure--it doesn't make the macular degeneration that has already ocurred go away, and it doesn't stop further progression. It just slows down the disease course, so that hopefully the person affected will maintain useful vision for the remainder of their life-span. I have not heard of it being used to treat retinal degeneration related to a coloboma. Even though it's a vitamin supplement & would seem to be pretty safe, keep in mind the recommended adult doseage of 4 tablets a day has very high doses of the fat-soluble vitamins E (1333% of the RDA for adults) and vitamin A (573% of the RDA for adults). We do not really know the ultimate long-term effects of taking this high of a doseage of these vitamins. After the initial study for this supplement came out (the AREDS study), another study showed that smokers had an increased risk of developing lung cancer with high doses of Vitamin A, and they shouldn't take extra vitamin A (that's when Ocuvite Lutein came out--it does not contain any vitamin A). My point here is that something that might seem pretty benign can have significant side effects, and I would be very cautious about giving Ocuvite Preservision to a child (it's definately not in the same category as the Flintstone's Vitamins!). Guest guest
- Another good point! I usually remind myself that if something has the power to do good, then it may have equal power to do bad if used improperly. So I try to get all the info I can before making decisions. Guest guest
I read a few more emails in this thread, and realized it was Ocuvite Lutein that everyone is talking about. This one is just 100% of the adult RDA in everything, so not such high concentrations of the vitamins (and no Vitamin A). Still, there is no children's dose that I'm aware of. Guest guest
and Michele, The " success " I mentioned was regarding a family whose daughter had EXTREME light sensitivity. Her parents got special permission from the state patrol to have darkened car windows, they kept their window draperies closed all day, the dad made special dark goggles for her to wear, etc. Once on Ocuvite with Lutein (a suggestion after reading about it on this listserve) and spinach in her tube feedings, her light sensitivity decreased and she is " out of her dark prison " . She does NOT HAVE CHARGE, but I know that kids with colobomas can have light sensitivity. I agree, the Ocuvite Preservision is totally inappropriate. Additionally, I received this reply from Bausch & Lomb Inc............ MY QUESTION: Do you have Ocuvite with Lutein available for children? If not, what is the correct dosage for a child? My 24 year son, who is extremely light sensitive and experienced floaters, takes Ocuvite and both have decreased. A friend, who has an 8 year old child with the same condition (colobomas due to CHARGE syndrome) asked about a child's dosage. Thank you. Sally " THEIR REPLY: Ocuvite for children is currently not available. Ocuvite products are vitamin/mineral supplements and are not contraindicated in use with children. With regard to the appropriate dosage, it is best to consult the child's pediatrician. Thank you for your interest in Bausch & Lomb Incorporated's products. If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me at 1-, ext. 2411. Best Regards, Sherry R. Pharmacovigilance Specialist < " And I am very interested to know the details in this case.
