Guest guest
I got this from another group. Does anyone know anything about this? How old is an infant? Mike _____ From: cruiks2000 Sent: Friday, January 30, 2004 10:43 AM To: childhoodepilepsy Subject: [CHE] Caution re Ketogenic Diet in Infants - Protein deficient After being all hot to trot about the Keto diet for (instead of drugs), I just found a recent (January 2004) article published by O. Snead of Sick Kids in Toronto that cautions against the use of this diet in young children. Basically the problem is that the reduced protein in the diet can affect physical brain growth and hence development. Great. If anyone wants a copy, let me know and I'll send the pdf. Guest guest
I would say an infant is up to age 3. I am going by what is on the infant Tempra drops box. Do you have the article, I would be interested in reading it. ******** Satnam, mom to Kristan, 14 months Keto kid since August 2003 > I got this from another group. Guest guest
Mike, Medically, children are considered infants until their first birthday. Then they are toddlers. I think it is generally recommended to wait until a child is a year old to start the diet, but I think there could be a fair number of exceptional circumstances that would warrant further discussion. Maybe you could post the article in the files section? Really, we humans can do well on much less protein than we think, and the brain always gets first dibs. The diet prescription is calculated for each child to allow enough protein to meet minimal growth requirements and should be adjusted upward, if adequate growth is not occurring. Guest guest
I recieved the article and I have posted it in the file section under " The Ketogenic Diet: A Cautionary " . In my opinion they did little to also remind people that the threat of ongoing seizures is also a negative when it comes to cognative development. Mike > > I got this from another group.
