about to have RAI

Hi Rod,

This first thing I would suggest is that you check out another yahoo group

called http://groups.yahoo.com/group/graves_support/

There is a lot of information there that I, personally wish I had known

before having the RAI myself. That was 6 years ago now, and I regret it

every day, as I multi-dose with different kinds of thyroid meds...

The endocrinologist that I am seeing, says that he now recommends that

people stay on the anti-thyroid drugs, as long as they can, and not feel

that, if they have a relapse, that they need to go to RAI next.

Nothing, no pill, can subsitute " quality of life " the same as your own

thyroid. Even if it isn't working properly now, once it is gone, you are

just subsituting one problem, that could be temporary, ie a few years maybe,

for a life long struggle to constantly try to find the right dose,

different for winter and summer, the right pill- synthroid? dessicated

thyroid? cytomel? a combination of these? Which combination is best?

After 6 years I am still adjusting every few months..

You asked what to do to get yourself ready>...... I would say phone and

cancel the RAI, get an appt with another endo, that is more comfortable at

treating your hyper, graves with all the different anti thyroid drugs, there

are two that I know of here.. ptu and another that starts with M that I

can't recall at the moment... SERIOUSLY... (do you want a lifetime of bad

memory?? hypo symptom..)

Good luck with this.. I know that the doctors I saw all sounded very

confident that RAI was the best solution, but in my experience, it was

not.

Nan
