Guest guest
Just so you're not confused.....the C problem didn't START when I went gf.....it just got worse. And gf diets are suppose to help with this!! Somebody is dead wrong. 32, Celiac, GF since 7-04, insulin resistant/ovarian cysts, gastroparesis, heart patient since '82. In the gathering info/experimenting with recipes stage of the diet. Hope to begin SCD soon. C Debate/venting With all of this talk on how regular is regular, it kind of makes me worried about myself. Since going gf, I have had a big problem with C. Someone mentioned their son went five days without a bm. Well.....I go weeks, and I never get caught up. In other words, if I do go, it's nothing to be proud of. Before being diagnosed with celiac, I was bulimic and would flush my system. So everyone thinks I'm just paranoid about this. But they're not the ones that have to live with never going to the bathroom. And I mean NEVER. I've read Elaine's protocol for C, and I know without a doubt I would be able to handle it with the way my stomach is. There's plenty of stuff out there that would do the trick as far as getting my system cleaned out.....but I cannot get them past my stomach. Not even prune juice, watered down or not. I would be very ill for a couple of days if I did that. If I ignore the fact that my stomach will rebel, and go ahead and eat something that will make me go, I'm 100% dysfunctional. If I just put up with the C, I don't feel well, but I can at least take care of the three kids and husband that I have. So as you can see, I'm STUCK (pun intended). I've thought about asking the doc for some Miralax, but I'm sure it would be the same deal. I talked to a mother of a handicapped girl who has had pretty bad C. They took an x-ray and found that her intestines were pushed clear up to her shoulders. And she only had a problem with it for two weeks. So I'm thinking, well.....I've had this problem for three years. I wonder what my intestines look like. Where is all my food going???? Granted, I eat like a bird, but still.....it can't be good. This little girls was prescribed Miralax, after they had given her four enemas to get her cleaned out. Yeah.....I could probably do enemas, but who wants to? I don't want to get dependant on anything. So....if any of you have any wonderful ideas or fool proof methods for treating C without irritating my stomach, I will give you a million dollars. LOL.....not really, but if I had it, I would. I'm desperate. Thanks for letting me vent. 32, Celiac, GF since 7-04, insulin resistant/ovarian cysts, gastroparesis, heart patient since '82. Guest guest
, Have you tried Vitamin C and Magnesium Citrate? I believe you can get both of them in capsule form. So, as long as you can swallow a bunch of capsules throughout the day, I think this might be a good option for you. Guest guest
Jody, I've tried the magnesium (it was in chelate form). It made me so tired that I couldn't function. But it DOES work. I haven't tried taking small portions throughout the day though, so that might be an option. I've not tried Vit. C.....in any kind of large doses anyway. I do take a little bit everyday, but I don't think it's even a full dose. Are you saying the two together is the trick? What do you mean a " bunch " of capsules? I would be willing to swallow say.......100 of them to fix the problem, lol. 32, Celiac, GF since 7-04, insulin resistant/ovarian cysts, gastroparesis, heart patient since '82. Guest guest
, I don't think you'd need to take 100. Magnesium is very relaxing. That's probably why you felt tired. Try taking it at bedtime. Also, the chelate form would not have the same effect as the citrate form. I think that Kirkman's offers both the C and Mag. Citrate in capsule form. http://www.kirkmanlabs.com And you'd probably have to take a lot and gradually taper off to get your system used to going every day again. But Vitamin C and Mag Citrate are not addictive in the way that laxatives and enemas can be addictive. Guest guest
Yes, I was taking the mag. chelate at bedtime. But I think the chelate works in a different way. I do take a calcium/magnesium supplement now, but it's not very strong. With all my heart problems, I know I'm deficient. Anyway, thanks a million. I'll go to that website and see if I can get some. 32, Celiac, GF since 7-04, insulin resistant/ovarian cysts, gastroparesis, heart patient since '82. Guest guest
, This might seem out there, but I thought I would pass this on anyway in case it helps... I have an accupressure book called Touch Points, that talks about the different pressure points on the body that promote healing for various ailments (like accupuncture, but using your fingers on pressure points). Constipation is one of the ailments discussed and they do list some points for that... I tried it on my son, but he wasn't liking it, he couldn't figure out what I was trying to do... so I can't say if it works or not, but worth a try? Also, I heard drinking warm water first thing in the morning is supposed to help (but not cure) it. The book is actually pretty mainstream, you can probably get it at the library... > Jody, > > I've tried the magnesium (it was in chelate form). It made me so tired that I couldn't function. Guest guest
, Constipation has always been my problem. It seemed that it was the root, until I discovered that it was really the gas and bloating that would occur after eating certain things, in turn this inflammatory response would paralyze my intestines, a vicious cycle, indeed. I've been on scd since last Feb., and it's taken me many months to fine tune things and make the discoveries that were needed for my healing. And, I've cheated numerous times due to chronic sugar addictions, and times of great discouragement. But here are some important discoveries that helped me to find some major keys; After the initial cooked-fruit-and-veggie-introductory-diet time, switching to eating raw (since D isn't a problem for me) fruits and veggies (that I could tolerate) made a positive change; yielding more regularity and less concentrated effort. Someone suggested a book about proper food combining; although I never got the book, I followed the gist, and this eliminated most of the constipation. Here's the gist: You body has a special 'cleansing time' each day, its morning til noon. Fruits move through the digestive process faster than other foods, so should never be eaten with other foods. Juicy fruits assist with the cleaning, so should be the only things eaten 'til noon. Bananas and avocados are less juicy, so should be eaten later, but again, not with other foods, and not later in the day. I applied this and it really made a big difference immediately. Sorry I don't have the book's name.maybe an internet search would bring it up. Another part of this was: only eat other foods after an hour has passed since you ate fruits, and only eat fruits 3 hours after other foods. Like I said, this has really helped. Another thing for me is eat small portions, but every hour.less bloating.and the less bloating.less constipation. And of course, fluids and exercize. Good luck to you. Blessings, IBS '97 * SCD 2/04 (C, bloating, painful gas wakes early am.) With all of this talk on how regular is regular, it kind of makes me worried about myself. Guest guest
Jody, The night before Thanksgiving, I put some powdered C in half grape juice, half water. Here are my symptoms since: Stomach irritation Fatigue Thyroid hurts Sensory problems....noises and a lot of movement are about to drive me nuts. Very weepy Headache Some dizziness with a " falling " feeling. I don't know how to explain that feeling, other than it feels like I've fallen off of a two story building. It only lasts for a couple of seconds. Happens throughout the day. It did make me have a couple of bm's. But good grief. I'm obviously exchanging C for all of the above. Licorice has helped soothe the tummy a little bit. Any ideas? 32, Celiac, GF since 7-04, insulin resistant/ovarian cysts, gastroparesis, heart patient since '82. Guest guest
Sheila and Jody, I used Natrol's Ester C powdered. One teaspoon has Vitamin C (as Calcium Ascorbate) - 3000 mg. And Calcium (as Calcium Ascorbate) - 330 mg. I took about 3/4 of a teaspoon in half juice half water. It might have also been the juice. Sometimes I can't tolerate it very good. This C is supposed to be easy on the tummy, because it doesn't have any citric acid in it. Needless to say, I haven't taken another dose. <smile> And by the way, I am Irish, but not full blooded. 32, Celiac, GF since 7-04, insulin resistant/ovarian cysts, gastroparesis, heart patient since '82. Guest guest
, I think the only way to know for sure would be to try the vitamin C in water. But start slowly. 2000+mg of Vitamin C is a lot at one time. Start slowly like 500mg and slowly work up to " tolerance " level. That's the point at which it helps regulate you, but doesn't send you running to the bathroom with D. The magnesium at bedtime should help as well. Guest guest
Yeah....and a legal VitaC would help too, huh? DUH!! 8o) I will have to start slow on the magnesium too. I was taking it at bedtime, and just about couldn't get out of bed I was so tired in the morning. And it lasted for days. Not a good thing when I've got these kids to take care of. I will definitely go slow with both of them from now on. Lesson well learned!
