Guest guest
I just wanted to add that the day Jake was diagnosed with HL the audiologist told us to go home and turn the captions on whenever Jake was present, whether he was watching or not. He said to never have it off when he was there. However, at an early age, we were STRONGLY discouraged from letting him watch TV at all by the HI teachers because it is so visual and they need auditory input. Of course they didn't have kids to entertain 24/7 and that was impossible in our real life world. Beth , an excellent AVT that I know still strongly discourages TV/video watching. It's funny, Jake can figure out how to turn the CC on where ever we go! He even turns it on at hotel lobbys when it is noisy.LOL Elaine
Guest guest
You should be able to have the captions on with the sound if you have CC as an opotion on your TV? TV's since the 90's are sukpposed to have a CC option.
Guest guest
Just a quick question. Do you have to have a special TV to have CC on with sound? I think the only way we can have it on is to turn off the sound and likes the sound and well so do I. I'm not sure if there is a way to turn it on with an ordinary TV or if it is just that we have to get another TV. -- Captions
Guest guest
All TV's made after a certain year are required to have caption capability but I can't remember which year. I know the last 8 years or so for sure ours have had it that we bought. The sound works when the captions are on. Elaine

Guest guest
Our TV was bought after 97, we do need a new one, but I can't figure out how to get captions on without muting the TV. It is so frustrating. I personally like to have captions on because I tend to miss a lot of what is said especially if the kids are being loud. I am not a very quick reader though so that can be hard sometimes. -- Re: Captions All TV's made after a certain year are required to have caption capability but I can't remember which year. Guest guest
<<Our TV was bought after 97, we do need a new one, but I can't figure out how to get captions on without muting the TV>> , If your TV was made after 1997, it DEFINITELY has CC. If you don't still have the manual for it (am I the only person who keeps those? LOL!), you could just call the company that makes them. You could probably even ask for help at any store that sells the same brand. You can also explore your remote by looking for " set up " or " menu " buttons. If you have a DVD player, you can choose CC in the " language " section for DVD's. At least in our case, the TV doesn't even have to be set to CC for the DVD captions to show. Guest guest
I believe that our captions are provided by the cable company because my hubby uses that remote to turn them on, but that the tv has to be able to access them. (I am intentionallly remote challenged -- I refuse to learn.) Our tv is actually older than the date for required CC but it works ... we bought it a lo-o-o-ong time ago, before we had kids ... when we had that elusive thing called " disposable income " and took vacations that involved airlines and hotels with a concierge. So, I guess when my hubby picked out a tv " with all the bells and whistles, " he picked a good one. Best - Jill
