The power went out, and since we have no windows, it got pitch black. I could hear stuff falling, but no voices. When the emergency power kicked in, I could see enough to get under my desk. I could just sit while everything was moving..... It kind of slowed down, and I heard a manager yell at us to get the hell out of the building..... All I could think of was my kids - going through this without us. My husband - here at the house where there was barely a tremor - was blissfully ignorant of what was happening.....this house is like a steel fortress..... I don't see how we can go back into our building - there wasn't a computer monitor left upright - water gushing through the ceilings - junk all over the floor..... I left work as soon as we evaucated the building, and a couple of us went over to the school. We were met in the parking lot by some other parents, who said the people in the school had requested that we NOT come in to get our kids - they were calm and doing fine. I couldn't stand that, but I left anwya, and went back a little later. It turned out both my kids had been near tears, and couldn't understand why no one had come for them! Ahhhhh! The guilt! After the destruction in my workplace (I still haven't been back - the damage is still being assessed) I had just a pit in my stomach thinking about my kids. I suppose once I go back to work and start to get things back to normal it will be different - but being in limbo still, it's kind of hard. My brother (the sane one - the other one couldn't care less) called me almost during the earthquake - he'd heard in Spokane (across the state) what was happening, and wanted to check on me. I wasn't around - we were evacuating the building at the time (I think). I told him his sister was hiding under a desk listening to the crashing of computer monitors and feeling the floor move..... He was so nice and caring about it - just like you guys..... Sounds strange, doesn't it - that I would be so touched by people caring!
