Guest guest
Yuka- sounds so very much like Aubrie in his management of these difficult situations. What a trooper! I truly hope the brace does its job so that all this trouble ends up being worthwhile. In the meantime -- I'll be sending some kind of comfortable, adjusting thoughts your way! Michele W mom to Aubrie 8 yrs CHARGE, 14 yrs and wife to DJ 's Brace Hello All ) is in great spirits - has been all day. Going to the appliance maker and trying on the brace repeatedly as it was trimmed and adjusted was all very fine. We were excitable and chatty and jittery with nerves. Being fitted went really really well. Practicing sitting, standing, kneeling and lifting went well as well. Then there was trying to leave. Trying to get into the car, unused to not being able to bend his spine, hit his head on the door frame. This caught us both so by surprise - that and the nerves from the day - we both burst into throat ripping laughter. Then we were able to get him into the car, but with the way most car seats are designed, his bottom sank into the chair and the brace rose around him and started to strangle him. The collar device was pushing up in the soft part of his neck just behind the jaw bone, he sounded like he was drowning. Quickly he figured out to put his arms straight down beside his hips and raise himself until he could breath. It took a good fifteen minutes to figure out how to sit. I know we could have just taken the brace off - but we were going to have to figure this out eventually somehow. The brace is more noticeable than I imagined. It is very noticeable at the neck. The bar that runs up and down in front in front of his sternum is very noticeable. The two bars that run up and down along his spine are extremely noticeable. He looks like Reeves in his brace. We arrived home. was eager to try a new videogame. Then began the search for a chair that would support him well. It has to fit his legs, he can't really sit deep because it makes the brace strangle him. Then he wanted to talk to Chip on the phone. His room is a very brace unfriendly place. All the comforts of his room strangle him in the brace - his favorite reading chair is completely unusable. By now he had had the brace on for two hours and 40 minutes. That was more than enough for the day. Off it came, now it sits like a silent sentinel in his homework chair. We increase one hour a day until we are at all the after school until bed hours. Then we wear the brace for one nights sleep. Then add an hour an evening to that time until we cover all the non school hours awake or asleep. Then we begin at school as well. So the fitting went wonderfully. The brace is more than I thought it would be, yet it is so full of promise. Actually navigating wearing the brace on a daily basis is going to be the hard work. Hopefully with some creativity and the undying enthusiasm for which is famous, it will just be hard and no more than that. ) Psychically exhausted- Yuka

Guest guest
Yuka, I was away for our Feb. school break last week and was planning on missing quite a lot from CHARGE land. But, to my extreme pleasure I missed not one moment. I must admit that it has been daunting getting through the messages, but I would not have wanted to miss the Saga of the Brace for anything!!! You and are remarkable people--able to look at each glass more than half full and share with the rest of us the hows and whys of your glorious philosophy of life. I laughed out loud at the idea of your " chair warehouse " (even though I know this is not really funny) and how he has been adjusting himself just to read or relax. My gosh!!! I am sure that if this had been me (then or now) I would not be anywhere near as accepting and willing to help myself. Thank you--as usual you have painted a picture and shared deep thoughts that make me stop in awe. pam

Guest guest
Dear Bonnie- Thank you so much for asking. is doing very well in his brace. Using our slight OCD tendencies to my advantage, I made an excel spreadsheet gradually increasing his brace wear daily, and he had been on 23 hours a day for the better part of a week now. Monday we went to the orthopedists office for assessment and adjusting. We left with a little extra hip padding (to center our gait), a tighter adjustment at the hips and it seems a more erect demand from the frame. We will be going in monthly to continue making the brace less and less comfortable until his spine is corrected. In the brace his kyphosis x-rays at 49 degrees (down from 64). Though the kyphosis is quite improved in the brace, they are aiming for a goal of 19 degrees or less in the brace (although 40-45 is within normal range) - presuming that he will regress 10-15 degrees once the brace is removed......the scoliosis is mostly unaffected at this point. amazes me with his willingness and acceptance. And he is more aware of his own strength in this area and taking some pride in it - which is doubly nice. Sometimes I go past his door and he has given up on the chair and is kneeling at his desk. I always chide him and ask if that is more comfortable - and he looks so happy. I tell him I am happy for him but that I have to go cry now - which always cracks him up (we have an odd sense of humour in our house). Daily regimen demands crunches, corner stretches and hamstring stretches ) My only sadness this week in this matter is that the orthopedist and the appliance maker did not make known their excitement to that he is willing to wear his brace so diligently. Rather, they looked like the cat that ate the canary. However, I let know that in no uncertain terms they were thrilled to have such cooperation and investment from their patient. Thank you again- Yuka Re: 's Brace > Yuka, > > How is life for with his brace now?
