Re: How do I go from Keto to Atkins

Mandy,

It's no big deal to switch to Atkins. It's nearly the same thing, just

not as precise. You are still supposed to be in ketosis. You are not

weaning the diet, just adjusting it.

If your dietician doesn't understand the diet, maybe we can give some

suggestions on making it better and perhaps getting some success.

We switch last week. This is kind of new territory. I don't know that there

is a right way to do it. I am sure it is different for every child. Kya had

good seizure control on the keto diet. She had just reached her emotional

breaking point. We knew she needed high ketones to maintain seizure control. We

have

quit weighing her food. We have been experimenting and have kept her carbs to

about what she was on with the keto diet. We do not limit her protein. We have

found she does best with added fat, it keeps her ketones high. So with every

meal we give her heavy cream with oil frozen to ice cream or some butter with

maple extract in it. I don't weigh any of it, just give her consistent serving

sizes. She is much happier. We are continuing to do the same blood work and

are monitoring her weight closely. We wish you the best of luck.

Mandy,

I'm jumping in here kind of late. I've been out of town at our keto

follow-up. We discussed keto and Atkins in depth. What has been

suggested just recently is that Atkins can work for kids who have had

success on the keto diet. There is no indication that it will work

for a child that hasn't been successful with keto.

So, I'm tempted to follow Bill's lead... if there isn't a way that

you can get to a good keto team, let some of the experts here help

you. I'm not really one of them, because we haven't had to struggle

with the diet like some have. I do understand nutrition and

biochemistry, though. There is lots of keto experience here, so

before you take him off keto.... maybe give that a try???

If you post his keto prescription (ratio, calories, protein and

fluid) I'm sure you will get some helpful responses.

Atkins. How do I do that? Is there any information available? I

cannot ask my dietician since she does not understand the Ketogenic

diet either (calculations wrong etc. from the start).
