Guest guest
Barb, I think you are right about throwing out the diet until Jake is feeling better. I would go with your hunch. Is he able to keep down liquids? If so can you get down him any electrolyte/rehydration packets (pediasure type stuff)? You could try mixing the rehydration packets in sweetened drinks that he will drink. If this won't work then try giving him the regular pediasure. Ideally the rehydration packets will help keep his electrolytes balanced and thus help him to not be as nauseated. If he won't take it then go for whatever works and restart the diet when he's feeling better. Rhonda * Hi all, Jake has been sick this week w/ the stomach flu. Seized all day Sunday, vomited all Sunday night, by Tuesday we brought him to the hospital for IV. Gave him a plain scrambled egg w/ butter, a saltine and some sugar free jello throughout..... He came home yesterday and I tried to reintroduce keto meals....as mild as I could make them. He is fighting food big time and tonight he started vomiting again. Am guessing I need to throw keto meals out the window for now...even " sickie soup " and the like. My hunch is just to try and feed him low carb stuff...and protein.. like plain chicken, a saltine cracker here and there...plain scrambled egg...etc. Anyone have any other suggestions or ideas? I'm afraid we're heading back in for IVing tomorrow unless he can keep something down....help? Barb Swoyer ..

Guest guest
Barb, When was sick we did the keto soup with the melted butter etc or jello and popsicles. Is he still on the full fledged keto or Atkins?? Good luck

Guest guest
Barb... We're going through the same thing with Sev. We had started the atkins version from SC diet to see if we could get more control and a stomach bug swept through out house. By the evening each day, we are down to him REFUSING to eat and finally throwing up again. I'm having to back off the Atkins each morning to get breakfast in him. So back to SCdiet. Maybe you couls stick to the carbs recommended on that diet since some are getting control from it? NOTHING grainy/starchy...potatoes, corn, cereals, breads, oats, etc. It's helping Sev, but it's not his total answer. I was hoping a combo of Atkins and SCdiet would be, but this bug is kicking us down right now. Hope he's feeling better...Hugs...Nan

Guest guest
He's on keto but I'm leaning toward trying something in the realm of Atkins. Been on keto 6.5 years. As horrible as this week has been, it's an interesting trial. He had no meds and no keto last night....I was afraid of pulling the rug out from underneath him, but he had his " usual " two seizures. Ketones are moderate....even w/out fasting, and he is on a sub-theraputic amount of meds anyway....and the hospital is on call and only 5 minutes away....so I may keep him on a very modified, low carb version for a few days to see what happens. He just had one drink and 9 oyster crackers....and they have stayed down so far. We'll see. I'm following the Atkins discussion with much interest. Might be an option for us. Guest guest
Oh my Barb, 6 years, you are a saint and there will be a special place in heaven for you. Boy if I were you and it was safe for Jake of course, I would try the Atkins. Sounds like he's keeping goood ketones and not seizing out of the ordinary while sick is a good sign. Do you still use a scale? I would think you'd be pretty good by now at knowing the gms without a scale. You could start with keto diet foods that you know are safe for Jake and just see where that goes. I hope he gets better soon! Hang in there. You are in my prayers!! Guest guest
BTW Barb a long time ago I had a recipe for soup and crackers for being sick on the diet,, it was basically some kind of broth with four saltine crackers. Ring a bell? I will look and see if I can find it
Guest guest
I have been wracking my brain for a mild/keto thing. Saltines are 2g of carb each, so that sounds like a lot. His keto meals are 3g of carbs each, maybe just over, 4xday. So I'm trying to stick to 12g of carbs per day or under. The biggest difference is that it's in cracker form (1 saltine or 9 little oyster crackers). Today I gave him a scrambled egg made w/ butter, and tonight he just had roast chicken w/ a bit of butter and a couple more oyster crackers. I figure as long as I get protein in, and mix it with fat and a little carb, he'll survive. So far it's all stayed down. He did get a bit " wierd " today after lunch, I suspect from lack of meds more than anything. His hands and feet got freezing cold, hands also dripping wet and got very spacy. For whatever reason I find the cold feet/hands thing common with his seizures. He ended up having 4 short seizures and I gave him his evening meds at around 3pm. He slept for a while and for the first time in over a week looks and seems almost normal. I think I'm going to stick to this meal plan for the weekend and see what happens. At least we've avoided going back to the hospital. (fingers crossed) Barb Re: Help/Jake BTW Barb a long time ago I had a recipe for soup and crackers for being sick on the diet,, it was basically some kind of broth with four saltine crackers. Guest guest
No, not a saint, just a Mom with no other options that work! We've been questioning the effectiveness of the diet for a while now - but the meds aren't helping, he's not a surgical candidate, the VNS hasn't seem to help...so what else is there? I think he's getting tired of it, and I KNOW we are. Worth trying anything, but I hate to do anything too sudden. Don't ever wish to go back to pre-diet seizure mode! Guest guest
Congratulations I am so happy to hear Jake is feeling better Hope the diet proves to be beneficial to him--after 6+ years as a Keto-Kid--it would be great for him and you Do you count net carbs or carbs? It is a toss up--we have tried it both ways We have found, she can tolerate counting net carbs more than carbs from fruits and some veggies(we rarely give fruit or carrots anymore With net carbs, Atkins and all the low carb foods on the market, the choices are easier--and the kids get more to eat--crackers, bread, bagels, pasta, etc We are going ever soooo slowly We do not give unlimited protein, because she had more seizures--??extra protein turning to glucose?? I still check and double-check labels We do not give sugar--but are trying some substitutes in these low carb foods with the Keto diet Maybe the net carbs will work for Jake thoughts and Prayers are with you Sandi

Guest guest
Net Carbs--These are carbs that affect the glucose On Atkins products and low carb products they show carbs and then they show net carbs (deleting the fiber) and it will say the net carbs can be counted as total carbs for that food I just started using net carbs, to see if my daughters glucose would not go up (she tends to have seizures with inc in glucose after fruit), and she seems to handle the calculations using net carbs Net carbs are not written on regular foods (from FDA calculations) only the low carb foods BUT on a carb gram counter for Atkins you can get the net carbs for foods (total carbs - Fiber = Net Carbs) Check out the Atkins sites on-line and you can print the carb gram counter Hope this helps Sandi

Guest guest
Please explain, net carbs or carbs? I'm not sure what you mean. On keto he gets around 12-13g of carb per day, I'm just ballparking that or less... Guest guest
Barb, This cold feet/hands is familiar to us. Rohan usually has very sweaty palms (particularly with sleepsz) with sz. Good luck with Atkins. Saro Barbara Swoyer wrote: >He did get a bit " wierd " today after lunch, I suspect from lack of meds more than anything.
