Guest guest
sleeping...... well i sleep on my left side and then pon my righ tside with a pillow between my legs cause my hip hurts . i mostly jump around switching from one side to another. usually i am awake till 3 ;00am. then i take some tylenol [again] and usually i fall asleep. i have one of those sobakawa pillows[ made from buckwheat hulls] which i never would have guessed would give me so much comfort. it takes a few nights to get used to it. its great for your neck and very comfortable. i love it and could not go back to a regular pillow if i tried. you would have to kill me to get this pillow away from me now.... nite all cathy from mass

Guest guest
> Hi All > Here is a Question, what from me? > Just out of matter of interest, in what position do you sleep? I have the right side of the bed so I sleep on my left side with a pillow for my head and another one between the legs. My left hip hurts worse so it is better to sleep with the painful hip towarsd the mattress(same idea as ribs, you sleep on the injured side since the other side gets expanded). I do roll over a few times during the night to the other side but prefer the left side down facing the edge of the bed. I try to bend the left leg and sort of straighten out the right and reverse that when I roll over. (When riding a forklift I like to hang my left leg off the side to stretch it to relieve pressure/pain) Also have my reading light attached to the head of the bed on the edge so I can angle it down for less light to disturb hubby while he sleeps. Can anyone explain a person that sleeps solidly for 3 hours and then rolls over and demands the light be turned off since they can't sleep?!? Guest guest
Pat, I have the same problem with my hubby. Snores to beat the band and all of a sudden... " when are you going to turn that light off? " And he keeps at it till I give up and turn it off. As to how I sleep...I'm on the left side of the bed...right side down, Right arm usually under my pillow. I also usually have a fan blowing across me the entire year. I feel like I can't breath if I don't have air moving. I don't turn much unless I'm having a tough time sleeping...then I could end up any direction. Funny Hubby never complains about a night of " can't get my nest built " flip flopping...isn't that strange?? Donna

Guest guest
Hi Gillian, Immediately after both hip and knee replacement surgeries, I had to sleep on my back with my legs as straight as possible. Now, two years later, my doctor suggests that I sleep as least part of the night on my stomach, probably to relieve pressure on my hips and knees. P.S. I noticed that my artificial joints weigh more than my previous real joints, so you can imagine what that means. Guest guest
Gillian - I'm not sure why you want to know this, but usually on my right side with both knees slightly bent and my right hand under my pillow. But speaking of sleep - why am I just as tired when I get 7 hours of sleep as when I get 15 hours? It doesn't seem to matter if I sleep all day on weekends or 7 hours on weeknights - I'm always just as tired. Moderator two cents worth: Since I work thru the week I tend to crash and sleep/rest more on the weekends. When you relax from trying to get thru the week you can realize you might be worn out or even have an ache or pain that you ignored until you let go after getting thru the week. Sort of like kids getting sick at night. They were going full speed ahead and then at bedtime They relax and discover, " Hey, I don't feel good. Guest guest
Something about sleep that I forgot to add: I have a water pillow. It's a padded pillow that inside the padding has a sack filled with water. You decide how much water (firmness) to put in. A friend ordered it for me from Canada. I live in San Francisco and haven't seen them here. I'm sure there on the internet somewhere. I love this pillow. --- DeafEskie <DeafEskie@...> wrote: __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Hi everybody - We are trying to find a bed that will not actually cause more pain! After making a very expensive mistake a couple of yrs ago (waterbed did NOT turn out to be a good idea!), we're being a little more careful (the waterbed was after another bad mattress purchase, too!) I've been reading about latex mattresses, but Joe wants to go with a regular mattress and boxspring. We both realize that we prefer a firm mattress - what I've read about the latex ones sound impressive to me. Anybody have any personal experiences they could share? I'd like something that wouldn't actually cause MORE pain than I'm already in..... Guest guest
Hi Lyn, I bought one of those pillows that I am guessing is like the latex mattress you mentioned. My pillow is the kind that leaves a deep imprint if you press your hand into it...and then it slowly returns to its original shape. The problem is: I can't stand the smell of it and have never slept with it past the first night!! Now, several months later, it still has an odor and there's no way I can stand it.....it felt like I was inhaling a bunch of chemicals. Since getting sick 4 years ago, I have become more sensitive to chemicals, smells and odors....but I have a feeling this would have bothered me anyway. ......just my two pennies :-) Good luck! Guest guest
You might try putting out in the fresh air for a few days.. I had a mattress pad that I paid a lot for and could not take the smell either we laid it out over the picnic table for a coupld of days and that really helped alot.. after you do that you could also put it in the dryer with a dryell sheet that should also help take the oder out. Is the pillow you are talking about made out of the swiss foam ( I think that is the name) I paid 120.00 for a different kind of pillow that I was never able to deal with.. I thought about buying one of the ones you are talking about though.. did you buy it at a store or was it sent to you in the mail?? heres to getting some sleep!!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
Connie....it wasn't my intention to worry you....although I'll admit I was hoping I'd sorta scare Cher into seeing a dentist :-) How do you know the abscess is back? Since I'd never had an abscessed tooth before, the only way I knew was that part of my gums were totally swollen. The tooth didn't ache all the time...only was sensitive to cold. As in eating ice cream....the ultimate insult. Penicillin has made me feel much better although I'm now back to not sleeping again. A general question for the forum: Do you have trouble sleeping? Either falling asleep, or staying alseep? How many hours sleep do u get everynight on the average? I've tried different types of sleeping pills and nothing seems to work. I had plans for the whole day and evening and had to cancel cuz when the alarm went off I'd only slept for an hour and felt terrrrrrrible. ARGGGGG. Talk about the quality of life....or lack of...lol. Guest guest
I have a terrible time sleeping....takes hours and hours before I fall alseep and then I can't stay asleep. It's very frustrating and sleep deprivation is a terrible thing. Tried some Ambien that someone sent me but it didn't help...course I have such a high tolerance to drugs of all types I wasn't surprised it didn't help. Guess I should count that as one of the blessing of being unemployed....wouldn't be very productive with almost no sleep each night. Guest guest
Well it is a big lump where the abcess is. Jaw is swollen inside and hard too, tender to the touch. I take the Alka Seltzer orange zest, it helps me sleep. It is a nasal decongestant, antihistamine and analgesic, it is Acetaminophen. doesn't taste bad either. There is a cherry one also. I also have a high tolerance to all drugs now, got that way in burn unit. Especially anti-biotics and pain killers. Was kept on anti-biotic IV 24/7 and was given pain meds every 2 hours, was given Morphine and Percocet. One of them at a time.....then given a high dose of Morphine when dressings were changed every 4 hours. Only time that did not have to go through dressing changes was at night. Took them about an hour to do the changes. After a while the Silvadene they put on would burn like alcohol, at first it soothed the pain was not the actual burns that hurt was areas around them and where they shaved my skin off for the grafts. After a while even the Morphine had breakthrough pain. Would be crying but not crying, you know tears but not crying. Guest guest
Connie... I can't even in my wildest imaginiation imagine the pain and suffering involved in treatment of severe burns. You have had to endure so much in your life...you must have the courage of a lion. Also, if I screw up my biological time clock with an insomnia attack, it takes days to stop the sleep from 3am to 10am routine and put it back to normal. Then, I take an afternoon nap and the whole thing shifts again. I try to get 8 hours of sleep in 24, but I must have at least 6 or I'm worthless. And it does effect the quality of life and how well you function. Anne
