Guest guest
Tammy I am unaware of ketones, but I will keep you and your unborn blessing in my prayers. Dont worry pray and remember he has the last word. Ok God Bless marbleyou wrote:Hi I am 5 months post op and 12 weeks pregnant, I went for my first ob visit last week and my ketones were very high. I was told to use ketone strips and check every morning, and call and report my results to my nutritionists voice mail. I was also told to eat every hour on the hour to get in the neccessary amounts of each food group. I have been doing my best to eat all I can, like told but, my ketones are still at the high mark on the ketone strip of 180. I am very worried because the Doc said this can cause lack of brain developement, or brain damage in the baby, and also kidney failure in me. Any suggestions on how to reduce these ketones, I can't eat any more than I am now. Thanks Tammy

Guest guest
Tammy, Be sure to drink as much water as you possibly can; that will dilute the ketones and make it less hard on your kidneys. Other than that, you might ask your doctor about liquid supplements like Ensure (too much sugar, but there are others I think). Hang in there, and don't get too freaked out, because that isn't good for you or Baby either. Guest guest
hi tammy.. i had a high amount of ketones in my urine too with my 1st pregnancy with my son who was fine even though i had severe hyperemesis and threw up a lot...while i had some scares during my pregnancy with him, he was perfect when born.. make sure you get as much fluids as possible in between eating like you have been instructed.. if you feel tired or lightheaded you may want to suggest to your ob/pcp/nutritionist about supplementing you with iv therapy as being 5 months out there and a 3 month fetus now , there is only so much you can eat and drink and it still may not be enough...also make sure if possible they do regular ultrasounds on you to monitor closely the growth of the baby.. i was literally obese but starving and very dehydrated and anemic(but this was preop, of course 10 years ago) when pregnant 10 years ago. just make sure your doctors get educated if they arent already about the special needs you have as such an early post op, they may not realize the seriousness or potential for you to become severly dehydrated so early out of your wls, or that normal things that work for high ketone pg pts for non wls patients , wls need more attention.. but if you are carefully monitored you should be fine.. not saying this to scare you, just to make sure to give some food for thought, if you pardon the pun.. ... please let us know how you are doing .. lisa post op lap rny 12-5-1 dr ikramuddin/univ of mn hosp wt 12-5-1 233, wt 150, 1lb from goal!!! 5'3 1/2 height edc 3-18-
Guest guest
Tammy, try drinking more water. I am a diabetic, and an avid Lo- carber, so I use those strips every day. In the first 3 mos after weight loss they stayed purple, they started to lighted up when I could consume more water. Now, if their real dark, it's usually because I didn't get my water in, or just got done exercising. The water will really help. I've also heard about the brain developement with ketones, and there is alot of debate over it. Dr. Atkins disagrees, but many others don't. With my first pregnancy, I weighed 320, and when I delivered I was 270. I stayed in the purple alot, and my baby was fine. I had severe nausea the whole time. Just try to get more water in and you should be fine. Good luck! > Hi I am 5 months post op and 12 weeks pregnant, I went for my first > ob visit last week and my ketones were very high. Guest guest
The easiest way would be to lower the amount of protein you are taking in and eating more carbs. That should help somewhat.
