Guest guest
The letter I'm posting here came to me via Chief Goldfeder of the Loveland-Symes FD in Ohio. Many of you know him simply as G of the " Secret List " , now admits he isn't much of an EMS person (he does say that he make a good IV Pole, etc) but if there is ONE thing G gives a damn about is life and safety of ALL RESPONDERS. In any case this is letter is a letter that was written by the Father of a FF from Penn Forest Township Volunteer Fire Co. #2 (Carbon County,PA) who was seriously injured while responding in his Personally owned vehicle (P.O.V.) to the firehouse on Tuesday evening. He was transported by Medivac (air ambulance based at LVH) to the Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) Trauma Unit. The letter below if from this kid's DAD, As the father of 4 teens this hit me hard and given G's Keynote while at Firehouse Expo a few weeks back hit home as well. We OWE it to EVERY ONE that LOVES us to come home after every call, Like The line is separated from the rest of the text for a reason! As said at Firehouse Expo " WHO IS QUALIFIED TO BE THE SON or the DADDY or the MOMMY etc, etc. etc. " NO ONE IS! If you pray, please keep this kid and his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers and perhaps more importantly the NEXT time you get in an ambulance, fire truck, police car or POV for a run SLOW DOWN and ARRIVE ALIVE! If not for you then for THEM! The Fathers letter begins here it is posted as posted by Chief Goldfeder: Hello to All: As you may know, my son was in a very serious car accident Tuesday evening around 11:30 pm while responding to a motor vehicle accident with the Penn Forest #2 Fire Company. I want to first take the time to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and for the enormous amount of support we have received. I want to especially thank the many Emergency Responders for their rapid assessment of s condition, for making the right decisions and for the excellent medical care given. I truly believe that your decisions and actions on scene saved his life. For this, I cannot thank you enough! is presently at the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center off Cedar Crest Blvd. in the Trauma/Neuro Intensive Care Unit, room J205. He sustained major trauma to the head, a collapsed lung, a tear to his diaphragm and a broken ankle. He is on a variety of medications and IV's which has placed him in an induced coma. Due to the massive swelling of his brain, Doctors had to remove a portion of his skull to relieve the pressure. Basically, he has been in an unconscious state ever since the accident. The Doctors immediate concern is s head trauma & the massive swelling since our brain controls all functions. Their secondary concern is pneumonia and infection. In order to prevent this from occurring, he was placed on a special bed which constantly rotates his body from left to right on a 25 degree angle. This is to loosen any fluids that may accumulate in the lungs which can then be removed through suctioning. According to the Doctors, he presently is in a Critical but stable condition. We have been advised that this is going to be a long and hard recovery if he survives the next 72 hours. So far they have been able to maintain his vital signs through medications. They have done just about all they can do medically. It is now up to ! If anyone needs to contact me in the next few weeks, I can be reached by leaving a message on my cell phone. I will return your call as soon as I possibly can. Again, I deeply appreciate what everyone has done and continues to do and I will do my best to keep you all informed of his condition.
