Guest guest
Hi , would not take the cal-mag-zinc supplement(I still have it in the cupboard) and our UK dietician (explaned to her they use it in the States, so why not here! )did not like it and put him on these really large tablets which he hates. How do you get your kids to take the supplement, I have tasted it, it does taste horrible. Are any of the kids on that supplement constipated? Guest guest
Nicola, I don't know if this would work quickly especially if were impacted but for long term maintenance we give our daughter the same amount of magnesium as we give calcium. This gives her a daily BM. Magnesium can be increased or decreased according to the BM consistency. If loose then decrease the Magnesium. If hard then increase it. Rhonda (mom to Shan, age 8, active, ketokid for 2 years) * (aged 7, on the MCT version of the ketogenic diet)has not pooed for 8days now. I took him to the local Dr(after 6d) who said he can still hear gut sounds so leave him for a while. He is on senna, cream/milk of Magnesia, added fibre(15g) to his diet.He is not responding to glycerine suppositories(I tried this on day 5 and he is really bunged up , I could feel it). He has lots of excercise, we try to get water down him, we do not get the recommended 1 1/2 litres. He has freshly squeezed orange juice twice daily. I think the local Dr is too laid back about this , help, what do I do now?? Nicola ..
Guest guest
Is there any concern with overdoing the magnesium apart from the BM consistency? I have started magnesium citrate for Francesca about a week ago, and haven't noticed any real difference. I'm giving her half a teaspoon twice a day, which is 400mg - and we give 400mg calcium. Should I increase it slowly till I see a difference? Thanks. Nicola - in the UK, magnesium citrate is available in health shops in tablet form made by Solgar. The Kirkman powder is only available through the Nutri Centre in London. > Nicola, > > I don't know if this would work quickly especially if were impacted > but for long term maintenance we give our daughter the same amount of > magnesium as we give calcium. Guest guest
Hi Nicola I'm surprised the MCT hasn't helped your son 'go'. My daughter was practically born constipated (she has a number of disabilities). Seemed like we tried everything in the book (glycerin, colace, MOM, enemas, etc), nothing really helped. She is g-tube fed and on the RCF based diet. What finally did the trick is a combination of Flaxseed oil, Cal-Mag-Zinc II, and Dulcolax suppositories. The flax and CMZ keeps the consistency 'soft' while the dulcolax helps her 'go'. Guest guest
Maybe the fibre is too high. You need a lot of water to make it work properly. If the water is not enough, it will have the opposite effect to what you want. Try increasing the milk of magnesia to 2 tablespoons. Some people who are desperate use mineral oil. We haven't gotten to that extreme. Try gentle massage on the abdomen in a clockwise direction. What is senna? Some people use aloe vera and it is mentioned in Dr. Freeman's book. Guest guest
Mike is on the MCT/cream diet. We used ducosat sodium (colace) drops - taste awful but did they ever clean him out. Mike has never 'gone' regularly - and can go 5 days easy between bowel movements. The longest between for him I think has been 10 or 11 days but glycerine supps worked enough to get things moving in his case. A year ago this was a huge problem as it was directly related to seizure control for him, and we would do anything to get him to go every 3 days, but now, we are more laid back and he goes when he needs to and it doesnt affect seizures. Constipation, help (aged 7, on the MCT version of the ketogenic diet)has not pooed for 8days now. I took him to the local Dr(after 6d) who said he can still hear gut sounds so leave him for a while.
