You probably mean Flagyl (metronidazole is the generic name) I had a course of this once for another suspected condition, and my arthritis symptoms improved, I hope it does the same for you! If I had only understood the connection at the time.... A couple of the rheumatic members have been on a metronidazole protocol, try a search of the archives at www. if you want to read how they progressed on that. Joe Graff is one who has posted details about it, look for his posts. I think your doctor meant (just guessing here) is that disruption of gut flora is not the only, or not the end issue (no pun intended -g-), with the diarrhea. I am copying below a comment on the diarrhea from info on amoxicillin at www.rxlist.com ~~~~begin quote~~~~~~~~ " Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents, including amoxicillin, and may range in severity from mild to life-threatening. Therefore, it is important to consider this diagnosis in patients who present with diarrhea subsequent to the administration of antibacterial agents. Treatment with antibacterial agents alters the normal flora of the colon and may permit overgrowth of clostridia. Studies indicate that a toxin produced by Clostridium difficile is a primary cause of " antibiotic-associated colitis. " After the diagnosis of pseudomembranous colitis has been established, appropriate therapeutic measures should be initiated. Mild cases of pseudomembranous colitis usually respond to drug discontinuation alone. In moderate to severe cases, consideration should be given to management with fluids and electrolytes, protein supplementation, and treatment with an antibacterial drug clinically effective against Clostridium difficile colitis. ~~~~~~~~~~~~end quote~~~~~~~ And, if you look at the info both there, and in the rxlist info on flagyl, you see that flagyl can cause candida overgrowth. IMHO, a good probiotic is a good idea! My doctor did not think it was necessary when I started the AP, but I am convinced it is, and am glad I take one, after reading of other's experiences here. Why not ask your doctor if it would hurt to take one, next time you see him. The concern from the rxlist info above may be the reason he wants you to take the flagyl. Did he mention C. Difficile or colitis at all? {{{{{{{{{{{{{Lyn}}}}}}}}}}}} I'm sorry you are having such a bad time lately. It can be a real roller-coaster with these diseases, and with life in general, for sure!, no? I'm so grateful for this group at times like this, when it feels like you have wandered into a tangled jungle of uncertainty. Isn't it funny, how things can seem to be going relatively well, and then suddenly the problems of life and/or medical problems suddenly cast a shadow over all, and we wonder why and how we go on. Please keep in mind that you *will* get back on that open road in the sun again, and marvel at all the good things revealed, that you cannot see now in this dark time. Hang on to that, Lyn, and it sounds like you have a good doc to me, if you just keep prodding him to take action when you know it needs to be taken. And try not to worry so about the kids, they will survive!--because of and in spite of you. ; ) Liz G.
Guest guest
Hi Lyn, Just wanted to concur with Liz's comments and add that if I don't take an extremely good quality probiotic three times a day when on antibiotics, I have trouble getting out of the bathroom, if you get my drift so I'd strongly recommend you get on a probiotic. Hope you start feeling better soon. Hugs, a Peden Lyn B wrote: > > Hi - > > Once again, I'm asking your help. My new gastroenterologist (sp?) prescribed > amoxicillan, biaxan, and prilosec for the H. Guest guest
Hi Lyn, You might check my old post regarding Flagyll--it can be dangerous for a percentage of folks. boy I hope things look up for you. felicidades, Felicia Jesus' life didn't go well. He didn't reach his earning potential. He didn't have the respect of his colleagues. His friends weren't loyal. His life wasn't long. He didn't meet his soul mate. And he wasn't understood by his mother. Yet we think we deserve all those things because we are so spiritual.
