Guest guest
Barb, I know how good that feels but as I told somebody else, sorry can't remember who it was but just be careful. I did the same thing about a year ago at about the same weight. I had worked up to jogging at 5.3-5.5 mph for 30 min or more at a time and I was soo thrilled! But then........... my hips, knees and ankles started hurting. It is a huge contributing factor in why I got off track and wound up gaining some weight back. Went from 284 to 195 last summer, now have been as high as 212. :-( I have talked to some trainers and my chiropractor about this and what physiologist say is to not jog or run if you are over 200 pounds. You can get the same effect from alternating lower speeds. For example, I get up to 4.0-4.2 mph then I'll do a slow jog, 4.3-4.8 the most for 1-3 minutes then slow down to 3.8-4.0. I might repeat the process another time or two. Just be careful. It's not worth the wear and tear on the joints. I have arthritis so am waiting until I am 190 to go over 5.0 mph again. Take care, Gena > I am delighted that I seem to have taken a quantum > leap with regard to my running.
Guest guest
Barb, Are you walking/running outside or on a treadmill? If outside it is a little harder to get an idea of how fast you are going but worth it. Just time yourself and measure how far you have gone. A 4.0 mph mile takes 15 minutes. It is important to know how far you have gone and how fast you are going so you can make adjustments. The thing is joint problems are preventable with good form and being careful but once they start are almost impossible to get rid of. I really suggest, especially if your knees are already hurting to take it easy. If you jog, only do so for very short intervals 1-3 min and if you can find out how fast you are going and keep it under 5.0 mph at least until your knees feel better and you have lost a few more pounds. The neoprene braces are wonderful too. Oh and also the combo of MSM, glucosamine and chondroiten are wonderful for the joints. Oh and that is great that you got good shoes! Feet are nothing to skimp on. I was born pigeon toed and had to wear a brace to turn my feet out and orthopedic shoes with real high arches. Well when I got to be a teenager I rebelled and stopped wearing that stuff. Had foot and heal pain all my life, cortisone injections, antinflammatorries for years and still could hardly walk. At 29 the doc said I had worse heal spurs then an old person. With good shoes and supplements, the ones I mentioned earlier and pycnogenol, my feet are wonderful now!
