how much probiotic?

i am confused about how you know if you are giving too much or too little

probiotic.

prior to reading about bifidus not being helpful, i was giving my son 2 capsules

Kirkman's pro-bio gold (inulin free) which had a total of 10 million

lactobasillus acidophillus.

i switched to kirkmans lactobasillus acidophillus which has only 3 million per

capsule. Since he is used to 10 million, i tried 3 capsules and his sleep

deteriorated. He also has a pimplely rash on his but and leg. unfortunately

there are 2 other foods that i think could be causeing the issues so it's hard

to say.

to complicate matters, i read on the website that elaine recommendsonly 3

million lactobasillus acidophillus.

so, my question is: should i reduce his intake to 3 million even though he was

used to 10 million. i've always been interested in giving him more of the " good

guys " not less but maybe he might do better on less?

any comments are always appreciated.

Thank you... part of my being able to cheer you on is from the fact that my son

has had such a hard time getting off prednisone - if we had learned of SCD prior

to his last bout with prednisone we'd be sooo much better off. He was mildly

flaring and off all meds completely - I know SCD would have kicked it quickly at

that point and we wouldn't have had to deal with illegal meds and such. This is

what I was hoping you wouldn't have to deal with as well. Now has to have

the meds - I don't have a choice at this point - or the disease will progress

too far and cause him to be in danger.

I'm so glad you decided to keep him on the course you are on - and I'm thrilled

to hear how well he is doing. Thank you for the encouragement.

For information on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, please read the book

I believe Kirkman's developed their new SCD acidophilus based on Elaine's

recommendation of 3 billion per day. I'm not sure why she suggests that

amount.... but the answer may be on her website..... or in the book (I don't

have my copy at hand). I know she must have a good scientifically-based reason.

It's hard to say whether the other foods you're suspicious of could be causing

the rash...... or perhaps the new probiotic could be causing additional die-off

(which rash can be part of). Since you were using the one with bifidus before,

it could be that things just need to settle down now and balance out. If there

are foods you feel are questionable, better take them out for now. Then just sit

tight with the dosage..... at least that would be my advice..... until you've

ruled out other causes. It may be that with the other strains in the mix, he

needed many more of acidophilus to stay in balance. Please go read up at

Elaine's site...... www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info....... for anything she

has to say on probiotics and/or acidophilus.... in the " Knowledge Base " . This

may take time....... hang in there.

I highly recommend that you remove all three of these (the

acidophilus and the other two possibilities) from your son's diet

immediately.

Once the rash is completely gone, try reintroducing each item

one at a time and at a point in time when everything else is

stable - meaning no other changes in diet or supplements.

The only way to be able to determine which of these things is

causing the problem is to remove them all and to introduce one

at a time.
