Guest guest
Jen, Oh, dear.. sorry you're having problems. We never had mildew develop, but I heard others have. 's " PonsetiKids " website has tips and tricks which include the following: --- Mildew in the DBB/FAB shoes If the weather is hot, or the child has sweaty feet, mildew might form in the shoe. Try to change the socks often, wash the feet and dry them thoroughly, maybe put some powder in the shoes. Use a little bleach or alcohol on a cotton swab to remove the mildew and dry the shoe with a hair dryer. --- I'm sorry to hear about the problems with the toenails .. is it hurting him? I don't know what to suggest there.. 's big toenails are slightly askew, even her non-clubfoot one, so I figure the shoes might be the cause, but it has never seemed painful for her, just a cosmetic issue. Hope someone has a suggestion. Take care, and

Guest guest
Hello! Breanna didn't have any problems with ingrown toenails or mold but she did have discoloring around her ankles and eventually that went away. I also after 1 1/2 months full time in the DBB gave her a couple hour brake a day to give her feet breather time. I personally have had problems with my own toes being ingrown (severly) for 6 or 7 years now and just recently they have become " normal " or as normal as they can get. The best tip I can give you on that is not to trim his toenails until the nails get to going past the end of his toes then just trim VERY little off and cut it straight off, do not round the toenail. If they get real bad you may want to take a wash cloth and soak it in some really warm water with epsom salts in it then wrap his feet in it and put a plastic bag or sandwich bag over it so you don't drip everywheres. I would do this once to twice a day depending on how bad his toes are. That will help with any infection and help the corners of the toenails to grow out of toe. I know Breanna's feet were always really sweaty and her shoes smelled really bad so I started putting baby powder on her feet then socks and spraying the inside of her shoes with a oder eater spray or something similar. To get rid of the mold I would wet a dish cloth or rag with bleach water and clean it out then dry. I hope this helps a little! Sincerely, & Breanna stumbalina23 wrote: Hi everyone. I can't wait until I'm posting about Calvin walking instead of these other nuisances....The good news is that we are one month down, two months to go full-time in the brace. He has ingrown toenails (at least that's what I think they are) on both of his big toes. I'm assuming this is from the toe pressing against the inside of the shoes, since his toes are still inside the shoes (rather than out in the open part). We are in Japan for the summer, where the humidity is about 80% everyday. I'm wondering if this is contributing to the problem, since his feet don't get to air out much. Anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure what to do about it. We also have mold in the shoes, can you believe that? Any suggestions? Again, we're in an incredibly humid climate. Finally, I don't think he is bruised, but his skin seems to be discolored on both feet around the ankles--essentially all the way around, it's a bit red. I think it's at the point where the heel guard is in the back, that the shoe is tighter on the foot at that point. I've been careful not to make the shoes too tight, at least I think I have, after we had the horrible swelling after the plane ride back here. Anyone else experienced this? Congrats to all the new walkers. Thanks for reading this. Blessings to all. Jen in Japan, with adorable Calvin

Guest guest
hi jen ~ we've had a lot of the same problems living in " muggy " florida. when kelby wore his shoes full time and even now, he would get mold in the back of them. i used rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to get rid of it. for the sweating - try using Caldesene powder, it comes in a pink container and it's usually next to the baby powder, it works VERY good. i also washed kel's feet with an antibacterial hand soap when giving him baths. baby soap just didn't cut it! just make sure to do it last so that the soap doesn't get in his eyes. here's a link for the powder in case you can't find it in japan. http://www.pharmrex.com/dept/subcatemp_3.cfm?SubCatID=4 good luck and keep us posted!! tia & kel 8-3-01 bilateral EDD 12-17-

Guest guest
Dear Jen, Sorry to be responding so late... I just came across your post tonight. YES, Desmond did have a rough time of it with ingrown toenails; in fact, the trouble started when he was still in casts! When he was in casts he was put on antibiotics for the inflammation caused by the ingrown toenail, but that was unsuccessful. The best remedy was soaking his toe. I would wet a warm washloth (as warm as was comfortable for Desmond) and wrap it around his toe, as I was unable to submerge his foot in water when he was still in casts. Keeping it clean was also key-- it is uncomfortable, but really important to use a cotton swab to dig under the nail-- gently, and get out any discharge that accumulates (is the toe oozing at all?). And lastly, bacitracin, or an equivalent (antibacterial ointment) on the toe. I continued the routine for Desmond for weeks after coming out of the casts, but since his feet could be soaked for real, I would use some of the " free time " out of the FAB to soak. I remember that the more I kept up with it, the faster the progress (although it did take quite a while to clear up entirely). Also, the advice that was posted regarding letting the nail grow out, and how to cut it... that approach worked for us. I hope this info is helpful... I know how rough it can be.
