Guest guest
DR. De Smet did not ask me to be prepared for a backup. He has done so many of these, when I saw him before i left Belgium he said that he had just done his 437th resurfacing. Thats a lot of experience. When you meet him and hear that experience echoing through his voice, you will realize. If you have this question, and ask him, i know that he will answer briefly an answer of his sureness. Andy was almost to the point, according to Dr. De Smet, that he waited too long for a resurface and would have had to settle for a THR. But, he went for a resurfacing, and that is what he recieved. I feel very blessed that my insurance company forced me to go to Belgium. I feel that i was in the hands of angels in this matter. I believe that if there is a chance that you may not be able to have the resurfacing, Dr. De Smet will tell you. Peg

Guest guest
" Everyone has to have a back-up when they have resurfacing just in case they get in there and something unexpected is found. " That isn't true in 's and my case is it Jude, Peg? Dr. De Smet didn't ask you to be prepared for a back-up (THR) did he? Once Dr. De Smet has committed to a re-surf he doesn't back out does he? There has been no mention in my communications with him about a 'back-up'. Lynda 11/12/02 Dr. De Smet

Guest guest
Cliff and I asked Dr. de Smet about this and were told that if for some reason a THR is needed he does a ceramic on ceramic ( I believe) HOWEVER he has never yet had to change his mind once he started. He does not say it would never happen, but just that so far it hasn't been necessary. Guest guest
Hi, Lynda I was resurfaced by Dr. de Smet in July. I knew that I had a problem because of bone cysts and asked him if he found he could not resurface what he would use. He replied that if he had to use traditional THR, he would use ceramic-on-ceramic. I think that everyone who goes in for resurfacing should discuss with their surgeon what prosthesis he would use if it turned out that resurfacing was not the best option - it's one of the things you should bear in mind when choosing a surgeon. I was quite happy to leave the decision up to him. Marie > > " Everyone has to have a back-up when they have resurfacing just in > case they get in there and something unexpected is found.
