Dear ,

I am expecting my second child at the end of June. I will be 42 in July.

Since I only have one already, I wanted another one VERY BADLY. If I already

had two, I might have felt the way you feel. Who knows?

Do I think my age will be fair to the child? I think it would be more fair

than not being born at all. I think it is more fair than leaving my son an

only child. I think it is more fair than having a child only to walk out of

your

house one day and get hit by a car.

I don't think your decision to have another one should be based on my

opinion. Many people who are your age who already have two children would agree

with

you. You need to decide what it best for your family.

Good luck,

I am 33 but talked with my doc about this after my resent miscarriage and he

said I could have kids until my late 40's safely! the world has changed and

women are having children later in life is its so common now. you know there are

no guarantees in life so enjoy what time you have. you could live to be 80 or

more and that's a lifetime you would have with that child but even 20 yrs is

better than nothing, that's 20 yrs of love! i say go for it!

Shelia-

When you say the last pg nearly killed you nutritionally - what did you mean? I

have been very sick with eating and hate to eat so I am worried when I hear you

say that.

I was somewhat like Sheila in my post-op pregnancy. My baby is 4 1/2 months

old. I had severe morning sickness the entire 9 months. For most of the

pregnancy I was anemic. I was extremely tired and lost a ton of hair (which is

fine now!) My real problem came from 32 weeks on in the pregnancy. I could

barely tolerate nay protein. Therefore I had extremly low Albumin levels. When

your Albumin level is low your body retains fluid like a sponge. So, I had

HORRIBLE edema in my legs and feet, but also my abdomen. So much that after my

repeat c-section I had to have a drainage tube for 1 week for all of the excess

fluid. But there are 2 factors you should know. I got pregnant at only 7 weeks

post-op and both my baby boy and I are fine now. Hopefully the in the next

pregnancy I will feel better, but I won't hesitate to do it again! Best wishes!

Well I'm only 25 but here is what I think. My mom was 39 when she had me, she

turned 40 4 months later. I was the youngest of 4. I have a sister that will be

41 next month, a brother that will be 39 in Sept, and a sister that turned 31 in

Jan. I came out perfectly normal and healthy. I will tell you though that

growing up I hated having parents the same age as most of my friends'

grandparents. I told myself that I would have my kids young so that they had

" cool " parents. I guess it also depends on how old your other children are. I

was 6 years younger than my closest sibling and we didn't get along well. I

can't even remember My oldest sister living with us or much of my older brother

either. It was like a completely different family, almost like an only child

too. This is just my opinion and the way I felt growing up. I do not mean to

offend anyone that has had or is planning on having children in their late 30's

or early 40's. Just thought I would give another viewpoint.

You wouldn't be the only " older " mom in your kid's kindergarten class. It's

much more common nowadays than 20 or 30 years ago, especially with

infertility treatments and women marrying later in life.

I'm quite happy that I waited to start a family in my late 30's. I'm sorry,

but the early to mid 20's was spent in graduate school. Late 20's and early

30's was making the big bucks and enjoying what life had to offer.

I really do believe age is a state of mind. Women on my block who are the same

age as me have children in junior high and high school. They look, act and

feel older. Also I can say my life experiences outweigh the women that started

a family right out of high school/ early twenties.

Marjorie:

Just out of curiosity: Do you still hate that you had older parents in

retrospect or was it a hang up as you were a kid? Do you feel you

parents parented you well or had any disabilities because of their age?

These days Altho I am sure it occurs, I think the embarrassment of older

parents would be diminished because of so many different types of

families.
