Guest guest
Hi a! I am currently living in Mexico City and Lamaze is the most widely accepted class here. I looked into Bradley, but there are very few classes here. I also had the language barrier working against me. Although DH and I are both taking Spanish, we are by no means fluent and all of the Bradley courses were in Spanish only. I also wanted to find a class that other Americans were taking so we could form friendships within our classes, again due to language restrictions. In short, I basically ended up choosing Lamaze more out of convenience due to language, availability, etc. than anything else. I was very interested in Bradley though...I'm sure it would be a great class. elle > Elle - > > You probably did alot of research on the subject, and I was wondering > why you picked Lamaze, vs Bradley, for instance? > > Any info would be appreciated. > > a

Guest guest
, " The Bradley Method " is another form of childbirth classes offered. From what I have learned, the difference between Lamaze and Bradley are: Lamaze focuses on preparing the mother to use her mind to condition her body's response to pain. Bradley is a more physiological rather than a psychological approach to pain. The belief is that it is healthier for a woman to be involved in the sensations of her labor than to try to escape from them. Bradley believes that nearly all women, given proper education and support, can have a safe and satisfying birth without medication. I am sort of thinking...bring on the epidural! No need for me to try to be superwoman! I also had more options here in Mexico with Lamaze than I did with Bradley! Hope that helps some..... elle > I have heard of Lamaze, but never heard of Bradley. What is it?? > > lisa r

Guest guest
Hi Elle - That's a very good reason to take Lamaze. It's great that you can take it in English. Then again, I live in LA, and there are probably Lamaze classes in Spanish. I am learning Spanish as well. a

Guest guest
a, It's very challenging learning a foreign language, especially the older you get, isn't it? DH and I have decided that we would like our children to grow up bilingual. Children are like sponges and just seem to soak it all up quickly. Alot of the American children here learn their alot of their Spanish on the playgrounds and are now fluent! There is a 9 year old boy in our neighborhood and he speaks 4 languages fluently. It just amazes me! Our Lamaze instructor is actually American and offers the classes primarily in Spanish, but she happened to have enough Americans interested, so she offered to do ours in English. We feel very fortunate that there were enough of us to justify this. My exercise classes are in Spanish, but I didn't have a problem on Monday. We've been taking Spanish about a year and a half now. We are at a point where we are able to communicate effectively, but we certainly aren't fluent. Don't know if we ever will be... How long have you been taking Spanish? Did you just have the desire to learn it or was there a particular reason to learn it? I really enjoy it, but it can get very frustrating at times..... elle > Hi Elle - > > That's a very good reason to take Lamaze. It's great that you can take > it in English. Guest guest
Elle, I was wondering if you were planning to do natural childbirth all the way. I know my sister said her Lamaze classes really helped her deal with the contractions in the time before they will give you the epideral. I'm totally sold on the idea of any type of pain relief that won't harm the baby. Dana 16 weeks (WOW is that 4 months already??)

Guest guest
Elle, My " escape " from labor pain was the epidural!!! I have only had good experiences with it though!! I tend to tighten up completely when I am in labor, I'm telling you those babies would have never come out!!! After the epi, I'm all relaxed and happy and pain free and ready to push when the time came. Good luck w/ your decision! Only you know when you have had enough and if you need something to help with the pain. Guest guest
Vicki, Knowing me, I'll be asking for the epidural when we get there!!! LOL I want this to be an enjoyable experience all the way ~ not one that is so painful when it doesn't have to be. elle > > > I have heard of Lamaze, but never heard of Bradley. Guest guest
Elle, I wouldn't blame you at all, I was in labor (hard labor, contractions one minute apart) for well......seven minutes before I asked for mine!!! Sheesh am I a wimp or what! I just tighten up so much from the pain that it is not pleasant! Hey, if they would have given it to me sooner I would have taken it! It was the nurses bright idea for me to go walk the halls until contractions really started...they started immediately when I stepped out into the hall!!
