Prednisone: Adrenal & salt

Hi Mark & Tony! Geoff Crenshaw here.

Say, I forgot to mention something rather important in my post on

weaning off Prednisone which effects everyone who uses corticosteroids.

AVOID SALT.

ALL SALT.

NO EXCEPTIONS!

The adrenal gland is involved in the processing of sodium chloride

(common table salt), which, BTW, also normally contains sugar (read the

label.) " Salt substitutes " also appear to be effected by the adrenal but

the process in unclear.

Using salt AT ALL stresses the adrenals and can result in flaring and/or

contribution to flaring which must then be controlled by increasing

and/or continuing the use of corticosteroids or other

anti-inflammatories. Salted butter, vegetables, canned vegetables, etc.,

are common vectors for this issue as well.

Salt should be avoided for an extended period of time after getting off

of corticosteroids and other adrenal-influencing drugs (approx. 1-2

YEARS) while the adrenal gland rebuilds, then re-introduced only in a

limited, controlled and traceable manner and only in minute amounts.

If you are concerned about getting enough of the common salt additive

iodine, it is readily available via ordinary foodstuffs and other

sources.

HTH, sorry I left it out.
