Guest guest
Hi Barb, I'm glad you're home and recovering. I had a similar experience as yours - my mastectomy didn't cause me as much pain as my lumpectomy. I think our fears about the unknown of surgery are strong, but once we've experienced one procedure our bodies know what to expect and we deal with subsequent surgeries better. I hope you can start your chemo soon and get on with this. take care, p.s. it is a beautiful day in Boston - close to 70 degrees! My husband planted some daffidols in front (guess who's the gardener in our family) and it really feels spring-like. Hope everyone has a Happy Easter, joyous Passover, and a wonderful weekend! Guest guest
Barb, so glad your home and doing so well. I know all too well about those drain tubes, they bothered me more than anything else. Sleeping on the back is a bummer also, especially if your a tummy sleeper. You will be in my prayers. Don't like the drains, don't like sleeping on my back and I could kill for a good night's sleep without night sweats (couldn't many of us). Guest guest
Barb, I never had a lumpectomy but as far as my mastectomy goes I needed no pain meds at all. Not even in the hospital. You are in my prayers. Just wanted to let everyone know I got home from the hospital on Thursday. Wednesday's surgery (modified radical mastectomy) went fine, no surprises. I am a little sore, but not as bad as the lumpectomy (go figure). Don't like the drains, don't like sleeping on my back and I could kill for a good night's sleep without night sweats (couldn't many of us). I'm hoping this is the last thing (and I've said this before) before chemo. Will go back to the surgeon next week and hopefully learn more as to when I get to go back to onc. Just thought I'd let you know. Barb

Guest guest
Thanks, . It got into the 70s in Michigan too. And we had rain. Love to see everything 'green' up in a couple days. Guest guest
Isn't that interesting.... no pain meds and me not much..... ok, here's a good question...... what about phantom pain in the removed breast? Anyone ever had that??? I've actually had a little of that.... pain or an itch where my breast should be? Maybe I should be on pain meds..... <s> Barb I'm home. Guest guest
Andree, it got in the 70s here today, but I was ready to put on the air conditioning. Got hot in the house with it nice outside. Can't imagine what 90 degrees will be like this summer.... and we live in Michigan. Just not use to it. Thanks for those vibes.... Barb Re: I'm home. Barb, Healing vibes to you!! Guest guest
Hi Barb, I experienced phantom pains the first few months. Haven't since then. I don't know how common the phantom pains are, but I had read about them so I was prepared. -

Guest guest
I'd never heard of that with breast removal, but I guess it makes sense. Why should that part of your body be any different? It's kind of spooky. When I asked my surgeon after the lumpectomy if I'd ever regain the lost feeling in my arm pit, he said yes & no. Seems our bodies compensate for loss of feeling. Sometimes that area stays numb but our bodies think the feeling is back. He said you can ask women if the feeling has returned and they will say yes, but then you can prick them with a pin in that area and they won't even feel it. Interesting what our bodies can do, huh? Guest guest
My surgeon told me that if feeling came back it would be within a year. I still have some slight numbness under the arm. A friend had numbness for about 12 years then one day after going to the chiropractor she suddenly had feeling again....strange. Guest guest
Since I've had 2 surgeries in the breast/armpit area in the last 2 months, I have no idea what feeling is going to return (except the phantom stuff I have experienced). If I can make it without the left breast, I can certainly survive without feeling in my arm pit. But it is interesting.... and something I did not realize could happen. Barb Re: I'm home. Guest guest
I guess sometimes some of us survivors forget some of these things since we have been dealing with it for so long. I remember when my hair hurt right before it came out. I didn't have a clue. No one told me and I didn't have a support group at the time. It was in 1995 and we didn't even have internet at that time. Guest guest
I think that is why a support group is so important, whether it be in person, or on-line. We can all ask those 'silly' questions and know that we are not alone..... Barb Re: I'm home. Hi Barb,I experienced phantom pains the first few months. Haven't since then.
