If it is, then maybe they should look at the possibility of stopping the prednisone (by taper of course). If it's not due to the prednisone, do they know why this is happening? Is there a longer term plan for stopping the pred? Also, how is your husband already on a renal diet that severely limits phosphorus? Personally, I would rather lose my kidneys than my bones. So if prednisone is the culprit, I would think twice about that. I know I'm always a little wary of starting any new drug myself, so, I know how you and your husband must feel. I don't think there should be a problem with Fosamax regarding the kidneys, as long as his nephrologist knows and gives the go ahead. Many drugs carry a warning about kidney disease, but that's just a blanket warning without regard to actual kidney function. I'm not saying you shouldn't get the prescription filled and then start it, just that it might be wise to get more answers from his doctors. The Fosamax can be stopped afterwards. The main answer you need is why the bone loss is occurring. Pierre P.S. I'm not a doctor of course, and I don't like to second guess other people's doctors. He should have way more than enough kidney function to handle his body's needs. Restricting sodium is not a bad idea though, as that helps with blood pressure.
