Hey Jinx,

An early welcome to MY state! I live with chaffed thighs and sweaty faces

every day of my life!! When we go to Disney or Busch Gardens I always take a

wet washcloth and keep in my bag so I can swipe the sweat every few minutes

or so.....You'd think I'd be thin from losing all that sweat??

But it's SOOOO darn hot here you won't be alone. Everbody's sweating here

now!

Are you taking your son to Orlando?? Have fun wherever you go...

Marge,

I would say you are definitely in the right place! First of all,

conratulations on establishing a regular exercise routine! That is a huge

hurdle that many of us face in the weight loss battle, and you have already

got it down pat! Now you just have to find the eating regimen that works for

you.

We have several inspiring success stories here on WLB, from those who lost

those pesky 20 pounds, to those who shed 80-150! And we have tons of

wonderful members who all support one another on their day-to-day struggles.

I am tte, 30 years old in Raleigh, North Carolina. I joined WLB in

April at 285 pounds, and have lost 25 pounds so far, by following the

ever-popular mantra on WLB: " Don't diet... change your lifestyle! " I don't

restrict any foods from my diet, but I watch my portions, try to reduce fat

and increase fruits and veggies, and count my calories (between 1700 and

2300 per day). I also :::grudgingly::: do exercise! LOL I try to get in at

least 30 minutes of cardio 3 times a week with either walking, biking,

and/or the elliptical trainer. I also do weight lifting when I have time.

I am sure you will find the group friendly and fun, and I wish you luck on

your journey!

Hi, tte,

Thanks so much! Congrats on the 25lbs! That's fantastic.

I'm 39, live w/ my bf and cat in Brooklyn, NY.

I know for me having a place to share the ups and downs really makes a

difference :-). On the JC routine, it was definitely the best feature of the

plan. I really like the concept of changing a lifestyle rather than getting

hooked into diet mode.

My bf is working with me on this. I basically figured out about a 2000 to 2300

cal diet using the Craig exchanges for fruits, veggies, starches, etc.

So, it's actually more of an eating guide than a diet, a way for me to very

consciously up my veggie and fruit consumption, to keep my portions reasonable,

and to down on the sweet snacks (my downfall, lol). I'm not particularly

weighing and measuring. The first week worked out pretty well, so I'll continue

on with it to see how it goes. On this regime there are no foods that are

banned, I just have to plan for them within the scope of the days calories. I'm

also considering giving myself one free day every week (which I did this

Sunday), where I can eat what I please in moderation. you can see that I'm

experimenting.

You know, I really think I was eating lots more ding dongs and chocolate than I

consciously would admit to myself, HAHA.

I can tell you it literally took me years and much moaning and groaning to

finally get to a place where the exercise didn't seem like a chore. I still

have to push myself sometimes. Living in Brooklyn without a car helps to keep

me walking. NYC is a very walk friendly place. When we lived in CA for 6

months, it seemed like everything we did necessitated a car, so that we walked

soooo much less. After we came back to NY, walking 3 blocks to the store seemed

like such a distance!!

I'm not sure why, but this time around *feels* so much different to me. I

really want to do it, be healthy, be able to do so many more activities like

hiking, biking swimming, that I just say now " I'm too big to do that. "

I've set a couple of goals for my self, one at 250, one at 200, to make this

feel as positive a process as possible.

I'm really happy to be here.

I wouldn't be rejected. I wasn't, I

I know, it's hard to keep up. I'm a week behind right now! It's good to

know you'll still be reading and just say hi when you can.

Barb, I feel like I know exactly what you're talking about. My son also had

hearing aids at 3 months. He has a severe/profound loss so his aids were

powerful and squealed a lot whenever something got close. At such a young age

it's hard to prevent that. I know how annoying it is. I don't know what to

tell

you about the squealing, but I'll offer another tip... toupee tape works well

on the back of the aid to keep them secured to his head and avoid them

flopping off his ear. In a couple months he'll have more control of his arms

and

he'll start exploring. The tape also helps to keep them secure when his little

hands start brushing up around his face and ears. After that he'll probably

intentionally start playing/pulling at them. At that point the toupee tape

probably won't compete with his strength but perhaps he won't mess with them too

much. My son went through several phases of pulling the aids out constantly.

That's when the feedback will really add to your frustration. Take it one

day at a time.

Also when he was a little baby I used to take one aid off when nursing or

holding him close to avoid the feedback on the ear that was against me.

Barb-

On a 3 month old, you'll need new earmolds about every 2 1/2 hours! If you have

a pediatric audiologist, s/he will understand the need for new earmolds

regularly. Otherwise, you'll need to educate your audi (or shop for a new one).

Hadley was 2 in September, but in her most recent growth spurt, she went through

6 pair of earmolds in 3 1/2 months.

You can also talk to your audi about resetting the program. You may be able to

adjust some of the high frequencies-- again, if the audi is not familiar with

fitting infants, they may have set the program too high. We slowly upped the

gain on Hadley's aids in her first year of wearing aids, probably making

adjustments every 4-6 weeks (or with every new set of earmolds). Depending on

his aids, they may have a feature that reduces feedback. Also, you can try a

cream such as Otoferm (also called Otoease?) that helps seals the mold to the

ear (available at audiologists or online through some of the hearing aid sites).

It's also good to notice whether the whistling bothers him. As an infant,

Hadley didn't really care; it's only been recently that she associates the

whistling with believing her aids to be malfunctioning. The feedback has always

driven me crazy (and it's been confirmed for me by a team of female audiologists

that PMS and feedback DO NOT mix!!), so I'm probably oversensitive to it.

The good news is that if the feedback can only be controlled by his positioning,

he'll soon grow out of it. When Hadley was Noah's age, we had an infant

development specialist meeting with us who insisted on hours of tummy time every

day, purely for her physical development. Sure enough, tummy = no squealing!

In any case, Noah needs lots of hugs and kisses from everyone, so don't let a

little squealing get in the way of that attention. It will pass, really.

HI

Hi all

I am the mother of a bilaterally profound three month year old named Noah. We

found out about his hearing loss when he was two weeks old through the newborn

screening in Ontario. Right now he is wearing hearing aids and will hopefully

be receiving implants at the end of April when he turns 8 months.

Can anybody give me advice about his hearing aids. Because he can't hold his

head up yet and does most of his playing lying flat on the floor or in his

bouncy chair, his aids whistle constantly. Sometimes I don't even want to hug

him because that causes squealing. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Barb

If his aids are squealing, they need to be adjusted by an audiologist. I am

medically hard of hearing and know about this. My daughter is hard of hearing

and I have brought her back and forth to the audiologist to adjust it.

Hi Tara,

This is kind of a weird question, but would you mind saying what

state you are in? I know a guy from back where I am from named Dan

that has a deaf daughter and is a stay-at-home dad. I dont know his

wifes name though....so I thought it might be pretty wild if it was

you all! LOL

Welcome to the list! This is a great group of people and you'll

got her first hearing aid in November 03 and just got her other one

this month. One is purple and the other is fuchsia! (She picked the

colors). She has a bilateral mild to moderate hearing loss.

Deanna, on the other hand has been fantastic and very accepting of

everything. She loves her hearing aids and enjoys speech therapy

(most of the time), Deanna seems more confident now. She goes to

gymnastics and can't wait to start kindergarten in the fall.
