Guest guest
So I was commissioned to go get breakfast tacos from Whataburger yesterday for the guys at the office. While I was at the window, I said....you don't have corn tortillas do you? The gal said no. I said oh...cuz I can't eat wheat. She looked stunned and told me the tacos were made out of flour!! Had never had a stupid moment like that before. Now I know what it feel like! kathi

Guest guest
LOL...I had similar I called a restaurant and explained about celiac and the need to have food without wheat...the person taking the call said to hold on and she'd check with the Chef. She came back and told me that he said the seasoning they used on the meats had wheat in it so I'd have to order any meats unseasoned (and avoid any that came pre-seasoned) and the pastas should be ok-- Hmmmmm -- I then said "aren't the pastas made with wheat flour?? And she replied- "yes, I think they are so you probably shouldn't eat them either." :-) Re: Re: Reverse Ah Moment She was telling me I could eat the flour tortillabreakfast tacos because they were flour, not wheat.--- esther_p210 wrote:---------------------------------I'm feeling VERY dense, but I don't get it.>> So I was commissioned to go get breakfast tacos from> Whataburger yesterday for the guys at the office. Guest guest
WOW...i was just telling a few people on here that my sister did that, didn't think flour was made with wheat, or crackers, soups, pretty much anything with wheat in it, she thought it was only the actual grain before processing...i've taught her a little, but she still thinks shake-and-bake has no wheat in it.....it's amazing what people don't even know they're eating. I watch for food coloring too, even stuff that has no color in it has coloring in it! > > > > So I was commissioned to go get breakfast tacos from > > Whataburger yesterday for the guys at the office. Guest guest
There are a lot of people out there who think that milk comes from a plastic bottle at the grocery store and water comes from a faucet in their kitchen. And let's face it, if restaurant staff were really brilliant and educated, they might not be taking orders at the drive through window for a living. Besides lack of knowledge, I sometimes run into the problem of workers agreeing with everything just to get it over with without any trouble or extra work for themselves. They don't think about it at all, they just keep nodding their heads and agreeing. I suspect that they don't even hear any words. Is it Kaliban who drew the cartoon about "What the cat hears"? Blah blah blah, Fluffy, blah blah blah. Back to scrutinizing those labels and asking careful questions. Best wishes Chris Re: Reverse Ah Moment WOW...i was just telling a few people on here that my sister did that, didn't think flour was made with wheat, or crackers, soups, prettymuch anything with wheat in it, she thought it was only the actualgrain before processing...i've taught her a little, but she stillthinks shake-and-bake has no wheat in it.....it's amazing what peopledon't even know they're eating. Guest guest
Yeah, same here. I've had many people say " oh, i didnt realize flour had wheat in it. " Or " if you can't have wheat flour, what about all-purpose flour? " Some people just have no clue. Even my aunts and uncle growing up... They thought if something was " organic " it meant i could have it. I mean, seriously, a ton of organic food is made with whole grain wheat and other grains!! We eventually stopped letting them try to cook for me and always brought food in a container with us. Otherwise I would go hungry! Now, 24 yrs later, they are better, well some of them anyway! Now I know which relatives to question when they say its OK for me to eat. HA! But we can't blame them or get too upset. A lot of people don't have to think about what their food is made of. And if they don't bake or cook, they probably don't even care. It's a slow process, but eventually more and more people will understand, at least the basics, of where we are coming from! > > > > > > So I was commissioned to go get breakfast tacos from > > > Whataburger yesterday for the guys at the office. Guest guest
I had a phone rep from KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) a few years ago try to tell me repeatedly, yes repeatedly, that their Mac & Cheese was gluten-free. NOT A CHANCE! I wasn't calling about the mac & cheese, by the way.... I just wanted to now if their corn and their green beans were safe. So, the dude read me the list... and he read the mac & cheese. I questioned him over and over (and proceeded to get on his nerves, I'm sure), but he stood firm about what he said. I think it was one of those instances where the CSR (Customer Service Rep) just reads from a written script of some sort and truly doesn't understand what they are reading..... I think his list must have had some coffee drippings on it and he couldn't see it properly or something... Whatever.... Guest guest
I agree, I also think that sometimes people equate wheat with whole wheat and expect something that is brown, so if it's white (or light colored) they then think it must not be wheat. Guest guest
Speaking along these lines... I have been diagnosed for a year now, and my wonderful, but not-quite-with-it-yet mother in law made us dinner a week ago. She was babysitting and left it for us. I did not eat it because I wasn't sure what all the ingrediants were. I questioned the pot roast, made in a crock pot with some sort of liquid. Hubby had no idea what it was, and it was late, so I didn't want to call and ask her (I also didn't want to say anything and hurt her feelings). Well, a few days later she asked what I thought of dinner and I told her the truth. She said that she had used a broth from a can. AH HA! Good thing I didn't try it- it probably did have wheat in it as most of them do. Her reaction- she never thought to look on the label!!!! Just because you don't think wheat is lurking... be sure to check. When I first told her I couldn't have wheat, she thought that just meant no bread. I WISH!!!!Sonja Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life! Guest guest
And I got my very own " Reverse Ah " (aka " DUH! " ) moment today. :-) I was in the donut shop fetching a Java Jug (100 oz of coffee for a meeting). In came " the tour bus " ... the queue of Seniors who had all clipped the same coupons from this morning's paper. The coupons were for an XXXL coffee and a bacon-and-cheese-bagelwich. As I waited for my Java Jug, one of the Seniors noticed the look on my face. She thought she'd cut me off in line by accident. I said, " No, I was just picturing what it's like to eat a ham-n-cheese bagelwich. " She said " Oh! Would you like a coupon? I have an extra. " I smiled and said " No thanks. Can't eat wheat. Just remembering what bagels are like. " She said " Can't eat wheat? Well, you could have an onion bagel.... " So, there you go... The theory that onion bagels aren't made of wheat is not limited to the pimply teens working the late shift at the drive-through. As we chatted some more, the Senior asked if there is some medication I could take so I could eat wheat. I said " Nope. Just avoid the wheat. " She said " Huh. We can put a man on the moon but we can't cure allergy. Fancy that. " I smiled. > > I said oh...cuz I can't eat wheat. > She looked stunned and told me the tacos were made out of > flour!! > >
Guest guest
I go through this on a daily basis with my MIL since we live with her.....ironically she is starting to think she may have a problem with wheat as she gets acid reflux when she eats wheat. Guest guest
Here's my recent experiences. At IHOP, when I said I can't have any wheat toast because I can't have wheat, the young waiter said " that's ok, we have white bread too " . And, last night, my Dad prepared the world's greatest green salad.....with a large dose of croutons on top. You just have to laugh it off and move on. Guest guest
You're probably better off avoiding it. Don't you find that people who get automatically defensive tend to do it because this is something they have been called on in the past. If he was so worried that someone thought his store was " unclean " , what do you want to guess it is not the first time he has had a problem. > > I had that happen a few months ago.
