It's not likely the wine had gluten in it. I won't say impossible, but

not likely. Doesn't mean you couldn't be reacting to something else it

it, tho.

Maybe a better grade of wine would help? ;-)

I am thinking so. It didn't last long enough to be gluten. Must have been wine-sick... man, that's the worst kind. ;)

Real wine is GF. But you have to becareful of the cheap

wine " products " , like Boone's Farm. These are sold in wine bottles,

but on the label it will say MALT beverage. Alot of college girls

buy that stuff, tastes more like juice than wine, yuck!

But as long as it was real wine (cheap or not), it was probably the

alcohol that caused the problem!

I've had gluten like reactions to some red wines. I thought it was the sulfides. Maybe that I was more sensative to them now that I"m gf? I just did a process of elimination. One of my favorite reds I just can't drink without regretting it. kathidoremusv wrote: Real wine is GF. But you have to becareful of the cheap wine "products", like Boone's Farm. It wasn't so bad when you were a poor college kid. :)

You know, I wonder. Don't celiacs sometimes have more trouble with sugar than the run of the mill citizen? Doesn't alcohol turn to sugar in the bloodstream?

Diabetics have to limit alcohol intake, don't they? Aren't many of us at least somewhat glucose intolerant?

I can't tolerate any alcohol at all, not even mouthwash. Don't know if it has to do with gluten or asthma, or maybe asthma is also related to gluten intolerance, since allergies are immune system related.

(I suspect that you just gave yourself a hang-over)

best wishes

I haven't previously heard any evidence that celiacs can't tolerate

sugar- i think that many of the GF products are starchy white

processed things and so constantly relying on these things may

adversely affect our blood sugar and long term health (diabetes

etc.), but I think that's a different thing than a glucose

intolerance. Isn't it? Actually I'm not that crazy about really

procesed sugary things, myself- but it may have been because I was

on a really bland but healthy diet as a kid. lol. Never developed a

taste for sodas and candy bars... Chocolate is another matter

however.

I think anyone, celiac or not, can have a bad reaction to wine,

especially the cheap stuff. It's quite tough on your stomach,

actually, just because of the acidity- my DH is not celiac and has

this trouble. (BTW, I promise I'm not a wine snob, we drink the

cheap stuff all the time--- doh,now I sound like a wino! Lol,

actually we mainly use it in cooking things like risotto.)

Alcohol lowers blood sugar so those of us with diabetes need to make

sure we eat with out cocktails !

If you choose a drink like Pina colada there will be a lot of added

sugar in the drink from the juice and mixers. Those carbs will increase

our sugars.

" Alcohol lowers blood sugar? "

That's the opposite of what I've been taught - which is that the carbs

in most alcohols can effectively and rapidly raise blood sugar. My 2

diabetic brothers both must monitor their blood sugars quite closely

if they drink alcohol, as they tend to get rapid spikes from booze

that require them to use extra insulin.

Aaahh, - it's the simple things in life that make it so great huh?

All I can say now is that I can't imagine why I would ever drink

that stuff to begin with. Thank goodness we have moved on. :)
