Guest guest
Hello Everyone, I am new to the list. My name is and I live in New York. On Tuesday, December 12 I am going for a consultation with Dr. Pomp, from Dr. Gagner's office at Mt. Sinai Hospital. The consultation is for the laparoscopic bpd/ds. Before I can attend the consultation I have to get a referral from my PCP - she is not very pro-surgery. My app't with her is 12/4/00, I could use all the positive support you can spare. I am so glad I found this list. I am sure many of you, like me, have not found a great deal of support from family and friends. I understand their negative views of surgery come from fear, but I cannot worry about that. Thanks, 30 y/o, BMI =
Guest guest
Hi ...I'm Darlene in Florida (a native NYer). My primary physician (actually he's my rhumatologist) was not thrilled to death either. I think it's because alot of people (doctors included) are not very knowledgeable on this procedure. They always relate to the old stomach stapling and all it's negativity. If this is what you have decided you want for yourself, just let all that negativity slide in one ear and out the other. Sure, this is alittle scary, but the alternative of being MO and all the unhealthy things that go along with it, are even scarier! Here's something I'm sure you can identify with. About a month and a half ago, I was in NY. When I returned to Fl. I called my cousin who also lives in Florida. She said that my Aunt in NY was saying that I "looked good," but gosh, she got so fat! Well, my immediate reaction to my cousin here in Fl. was to make light of it, and I said, oh..I'm so sick of it, that's it, I'm going to have my stomach stapled! (I was just talking out of my hat, not meaning it). But anyhow, just remember this: opinions are like a..holes, everybody has one! Be strong, my dear in whatever your decision is. This is a great site, with a lot of caring people, and most of us all go through the same things with people. For myself, I learned that insanity is doing the same thing (diets) over and over and expecting different results. Sure, I'm the little girl with the curl. When I diet I'm! "the best" dieter. I can lose 100 lbs., I can stay that weight for about 10 minutes and whoops, there it is...it comes right back. I'm so sick of it. I'm sick of being unhealthy. I have severe arthritis. Until a few weeks ago, I had been on Methatrexate for about 4 years to alleviate the pain. Meth. is a form of chemotherapy also used to treat cancer patients. I'm trying another med. now. But the point is, I just want to be around to see my Grandchildren and with this disease, big chances are, I will not be. Glad you are here. You are in the right place. Get your answers to your questions, then make up your decision what you want to do. Good luck, hon. Remember this: it only takes one person to change your life....you. Love and Hugs(((((()))))), Darlene

Meth. is a form of chemotherapy also used to treat cancer patients Darlene, I am also on methotrexate for my rheumatoid arthritis. My question is what is the new med you will be on ... is the pain really controlled thru the weight loss, and how did you manage the surgery .... did they make you stop the methotrexate totally? I am also on a low dosage of prednisone and I have been told I will have to cease that prior to surgery .. but I just saw my rheumatologist today and she assures me she will speak to my bariatric surgeon about keeping me on something to control the pain. I worry most about the pain, since the onset of my illness was very sudden and VERY painful and the prednisone was like a lifesaver ... the pain was controlled. How long did it take or how much weight loss before you felt results in regard to your arthritis? Thanks for the input. Guest guest
Hi Judy: Happy Wednesday! Judy, I haven't had the surgery yet, I am still waiting. I told my doctor that I wanted to try something other than Methatrexate; I had been on it for app. 4 years, and still felt basically the same. He put me on something call Arava. This is the pill form of Enbril, which I am going on next. Enbril is self injection (I'm not looking forward to all that fun....maybe it won't be too bad). I actually feel a lot better than when I was on the Meth. I was sick of getting sick with the Meth. I would get the big "D" and feel very sick to my stomach anytime from an hour after the injection to 2 days later. I am very please with this new drug. I know how awful this arthritis thing is. When we had company a few months back, they wanted to go to Disneyworld and! Universal Studio. At that time I was in a "flare up" so I had to rent one of those carts to get around. I have done the theme parks many times and at the end of the day, I was in so much pain, I couldn't sleep that night. This time, I couldn't even attempt to start to walk around. I wish they would find some kind of medication that would make us virtually pain free...maybe some day. I am hoping to have my DS soon. I don't know when it will be, but I do know Dr. 's office is now supposedly booked until January. Poor Doctor , is a very busy man; I have so much love and respect for him already and I haven't even met him as yet, but I know he is the man who is going to change my life, and hopefully yours too, and we won't be in so much pain. Love, Darlene
Guest guest
in NY, Hi, my name is also (in GA). I am waiting on my LOMN and will be having the lap bpd/ds with Dr. . I would highly recommend for you to print out all of the information you can find on the bpd/ds- thru the duodenalswitch.com site, the obesityhelp.com site etc and take it with you to your doctor appt. Also take a list of support groups/boards you are a member of and any chats you regularly participate in regarding the surgery. The more information you take with you and the more you show her you know about the surgery the better. I know that my PCP and OBGYN have been VERY supportive due to the amount of time and effort I have put into educating myself and them on my choice. Hope this helps. > Hello Everyone, > > I am new to the list. My name is and I live in New York. Guest guest
, One of the things I did when I went to talk to my PCP was to bring a copy of the Hess report and a break down of a web site at www.mywls.com This Heidi's web site. BTW her story on Amos is what brought me into search for info on the DS I had been searching the RNY. Anyway I did bring both of those things for information to give to the PCP. She admittedly acknowledged she had little to no dealings with anyone having this done. You will find that most Primary Docs do not much knowledge when it comes to WLS or nutrition in general. If you go to her with more knowledge than she, let her know how much you know about this and how much you know this is what is right for you , you just might be able to turn her around. Oh by the way welcome to the group. Vera-Lansdale,Pa. Bmi-59 Consult with Dr. Herron Dec 07 1 week away!!! On Wed, 29 Nov 2000 00:04:19 EST lkince@... writes: > Hello Everyone, > > .
