Guest guest
Hi : I think of you so often, as we were about the same height and size. I feel so bad for you, having to go through this twice. I can really feel with you on the slow weight loss. I did lose more than you, but it was so slow, and at 7 months I stopped losing. I am now a little over a year, and for 5 months I have tried eating more, less, less, carbs, sugar, ect., and nothing will start the loss again. I was told by Dr.Gagner's associate, that I should fly to New York to talk to him, and maybe he could do something more. I don't think so, I am not going to go through it again. I still have 41 lbs to lose, and that is at the high end of the charts for my body height. I just want you to know that you aren't alone. I will email you personally, maybe we can compare notes. Hugs to you, Patti S
Guest guest
Hi ! I remember you! ::hugs:: I'm so sorry to read about your unsatisfactory experience. Do you mind answering a few questions? What was your starting weight/BMI? What type of revision was done -- they shortened your common tract? What did Dr. Hess say was the cause of your initial stalled weight loss? Did Hess do the revision? Has he said anything regarding your only losing 15 pounds since the revision? How's your eating? Guest guest
, How long was your common tract and stomach size on the first surgery?? What did they revise it to? Considering you are only 5 weeks out of the second surgery, you may just be experiencing a " normal " plateau that often people who have this surgery experience. I know because of your previous experience this could really be hard to handle. But maybe your previous experience has you thinking this is doomed when it really isn't. I can't even imagine how hard it must be (or it is actually impossible) to relax about it. This may be of absolutely no comfort, but as I have said before I try to think of surgery success not only in how much I lose but also in how much more I haven't gained. I started at 267 and I know that it was just a matter of time before I would have been over 300. Dawn Dr. Hess 4/27/00 267 to
Guest guest
Hi all. Hi Mel and Patti! It's great to hear from you again. In answer to questions about my weight loss (or lack there of) here goes. My start weight was 256, I lost down to 227 the year after my first DS, and I've lost an additional 13 pounds since my revision. The same surgeon who did the first surgery (Dr. Neil Thomford) did the revision. I requested an out-of-plan surgeon (Dr. Hess) for both surgeries, but was denied by insurance. However, I see Dr. Hess on my own dime and he very graciously provided my surgeon with his (Dr. Hess's) guidelines on the revision (i.e. how much more common tract he should bypass, how much small to make the stomach). So when I had the revision, my surgeon followed Dr. Hess's suggestion on further shortening the common tract and taking out even more stomach. I'm eating much smaller amounts, probably one-fourth or one-third the food I did before I started this whole thing. I eat small meals, protein first, then follow up with vegetables, and few snacks. Snacks consist of hard cheese, nuts, or fresh fruit for the most part. My surgeon thinks it's just my metabolism, that my body is " highly adaptable " to the procedures its been through and that perhaps my body has just adapted to the surgery. I'm not quite up to exercising yet, but have been walking quite a bit. Hopefully I'll be able to rejoin my aquajog and water aerobic classes again soon. I will be seeing Dr. Hess tonight at his meeting. I haven't spoken with him since last month's meeting, so he doesn't know yet that my weight loss has stalled again. I'm very interested in what he has to say. I hope to meet some of you at his meeting tonight. I don't know what options are left open for me, I don't know if I have the spirit to go through a third revision, or if that is even possible. That will have all kinds of benefits in the short and long run. Consistency is the key of course. Hopefully, you're not weighing all the time -- That can be really demoralizing. Margie from Texas has had a revision and I remember her mentioning that she has had a slower weight-loss than those of us who haven't had other wlsurgeries. Maybe you could ask her about it. I'm sure she wouldn't mind you writing to her directly if she doesn't see this because she is quite busy and travels a lot. She is a fountain of information:) msvl Warm regards, Sharon - Huntington Beach, CA DGB w/DS - Dr. Anthone USC June 1, 1999 Hernia Repair w/TT - Dr. A. I agree with the other person who said that maybe you've just hit a plateau this time and it will pass! I know that I hit many plateaus along the way, and the first one was at a mere 2 weeks postop! Guest guest
Hi and Patti -- The human body is an amazing, and often frustrating, mechanism. It can be so adaptable and clever that even our very best efforts to thwart it don't seem to be effective. I've been there with you at times and felt the frustration often, but thankfully, and due to the wisdom of someone telling me to -keep records-, I can see a pattern of losing about 2# a month over the last few months for me. I know it depends partially on where we start, etc. The time has gone so fast. I can hardly believe that it's been a year since my 1st consultation and 10 months since my revision. I remember reading about you both as I devoured all posts during that time. I hope you both find answers, and maybe advance the science just a little further.
