Guest guest
Hi Sherene... My dad also has diverticulitis...woke up in a pool of blood two years ago and he had NO idea what had happened!! He lost two pints of blood...amazing, huh? Luckily, diverticulitis was the better diagnosis than what he had originally feared, and although he has had a couple of flareups, by sticking with a high fiber intake he has done fine. Unfortunately, you can't eat a bowl of Shreddies in the morning and drink Metamucil in the evening like he does! I did read, though, that Citrucel is GF and it would provide a lot of fiber if you're willing to go that route. I've had it and I didn't think that it tasted too badly...considering...you can mix it into fruit juice, too, if that would help. C

Guest guest
Don't be too scared...just do what you can to keep yourself happy and then put it into the back of your mind, because you have life to live C > > > Hi Sherene... > > > > My dad also has diverticulitis...woke up in a pool of blood two years > > ago and he had NO idea what had happened!! > > > that's what scares me about this disease. > > > > > I did read, though, that > > Citrucel is GF and it would provide a lot of fiber if you're willing > > to go that route. Believe it or not, the majority of the population has at least minor Diverticulosis and never knows it until their doctor mentions it after a routine colon cancer screening colonoscopy. Most people will never have a problem from it. I've got it too but never developed Diverticulitis which is an infection of the diverticuli (pouches). Like you, I never had a fully formed stool before going gluten free, but I had the diverticuli in my pre-gluten free colonoscopy. > any ideas how to get that much fibre into me since I can't use All > Bran flakes. I eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies. I went and > looked up the fiber content of them all and you have to eat a whole > lot of fruit to make 30g a day. Average sized apples and pears each have 4g of fiber. Nuts and seeds are controvertial for diverticulosis, but my GI doc agrees with me that for people who aren't prone to infections they're a great source of fiber. I eat salad or at least cut vegetables every day with my lunch. I try to throw some flax meal on top of my salad when I remember. You can also toss some in cereal or yogurt. For breakfast every morning, I microwave up some eggs with soy milk and spinach. Really yummy and a good source of calcium, protein and fiber. I just cut a frozen block of spinach into 6 pieces and throw each piece into a little ziploc bag. Makes an easy pre-measured portion to throw into my eggs. Guest guest
Actually diverticulitis and diverticulosis are a little bit different. The 'itis comes from having the 'osis, but some people never actually get the 'itis. Some live with the 'osis and never even know that they have it. And, speaking of 'osis....my aunt was just diagnosed with it last week. She is the one that I think for sure has celiac. I thought I was making head way with when she told me finally that she was going to get tested at her anual colonscopy and other stuff. Well, she had the blood test and it came back negative so now she thinks that everything that I have been telling her is a crock of crap. She still can't figure out what is wrong and she has been so sick and is losing weight again. She doesn't have anything to lose though. She is maybe 110-115 pounds dripping wet. So, now I have no idea how to explain to her in laymans terms that she will understand and listen to me that she can have negative bloods tests and still have it. Any ideas? Guest guest
Oops - I guess I said something similar in my message because I didn't read this first. Oh well. > > > I have been told I have to eat at least 30g of fibre a day because > > it now appears I have diverticulosis. go figure, until a year ago > > I had never had a formed stool (not since birth), one year gf and > > I have not had constipation and yet here I am with diverticulosis > > a year after going gf. > > Believe it or not, the majority of the population has at least minor > Diverticulosis and never knows it until their doctor mentions it after > a routine colon cancer screening colonoscopy. Guest guest
Isn't there good fiber in beans? I use whole bean flour and brown rice flour. There's fiber in that.========can't eat beans. part of my problem is that I have multiple food intolerances and a large portion of the high fibre foods are on that list with beans being right at the topShez
Guest guest
By the way, 30 g of fiber is what we’re all supposed to be eating every day! Shez wasn’t asked to double the norm or anything… Laurie lbilyeu@...
