You probably do NOT fit their profile, but you should check out the

yahoo group " attachasd " --it deals with autistic children but they

will " let you in(!) " to discuss the diet! I'm on this group because

of my adopted dd having possible Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. They have

been a GREAT help & you'll learn ALOT about a GFCF diet there. MOST

are on that diet...we are only gf!

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/attachasd/

" This group is for adoptive families who are trying to determine if

their child's issues/behaviors are due to attachment problems, RAD,

PTSD, Sensory Integration, Autism Spectrum Disorders, adoption

issues or any combination of the above. Parents on the list are

actively seeking appropriate treatments to help their particular

child. "

Forgot to add, they have files of GFCF recipes, links, etc. There

are probably other yahoo groups dedicated just to gfcf issues...do a

search. I think you'll find many have to do with Autism because, for

some reason a GFCF diet REALLY helps autistic kids.

I have found that the GFCF sites are under " autism " ...so I am having

a hard time seperating between helpful GFCF stuff and " way over my

head Autism stuff " .

They take enzymes, and do lots of stuff that I have not figured out.

Thanks

When our son was diagnosed, he would not drink milk at all. We were told to keep him casein free for a few months til he healed and then introduce milk into his diet. After waiting 3 mos. on the gf diet, we gave him milk and he drank it. Now, we cannot give him enough milk. He loves it. I remember when we first tried milk at age one and he hardly drank any and then the smell was too much for him, so he would not go near it. Hope this helps in your situation. Lauretta

So..we are new to the diet. I am in the process of elimating gluten foods. We should be GF soon. When we originally did the Entrolab stool & saliva test, they felt we should remove both gluten & casien from my 3yr DS diet. I am wondering how long milk should be removed? He does not have an " allergy " to milk, but I understand milk is a common problem for gluten senative people. Once I have removed milk for (how ever long)

is it okay to have some milk. Unlike once I remove gluten it is a 100% gluten free diet.FYI...Entrolab said he had " dietary gluten sensitivity " and " increased amount of dietary fat in the stool, likely due to samll instestinal malabsorbition/damage. He also has elevated igG.Sorry so long...but has anyone else removed milk/casien and how long should it be reomved?Thank you for your advise.

- my 9 year old tested positive for milk and eggs allergies - after 9 months without these and being GF he is now testing negative for these allergies. He also tolerates milk and eggs in his diet. He eats 1 - 2 servings of milk in the form of cheese or yogurt per day, but says cows milk still upsets his stomach so for now he's sticking with soy milk. Kerri wrote: So..we are new to the diet. Does your 3yr son have dark circles under his eyes, any kind of

sensory issues, or temper/aggression that seems above and beyond?

I'm an escapee from the Yahoo group GFCFrecipes. My son is autistic

and a gfcf diet has done wonders for many autistic folks. If you want

more info on gfcf for yourself, you might want to check that group

out.

(FYI, Laurel, if you're interested, this site:

http://www.glutensolutions.com/autism.htm might help you to

understand why a gfcf diet is a must for autistics. Sorry... didn't

mean to get off topic.) :-)

I have, also as the result of an enterolab test. I didn't remove it until after I had been GF for 8 months and started feeling a lot of inflammation. I feel so much better with it removed. My understanding is that if you have an autoimmune response to it, like gluten, you should never eat any of it again.Best,Ciara

Eliminating milk is quite standard upon starting a GF diet. With

the damage to the digestive tract, the body starts slowing down the

production of digestive enzymes. Casein is a large protein that is

hard to break down, especially in young kids. After healing, your

son should be able to tolerate milk products again. Wait a few

months and try to introduce milk again, but slowly. you dont want

to overwhelm his body.

Teenagers & adults do not heal as quickly and should wait longer. I

just spoke with 3 different newly diagnosed teens and they all were

told the same thing(by different dr.s): try and avoid milk for a

year to 18 months and then reintroduce it slowly.

, we gave our 2 year old Lactaid for about 6 months while we

began the GF diet and he liked it a lot. It comes in chocolate too.

Because that has an enzyme (lactase) that helps digest lactose, it

helped him eat the cheese he loves (in small amounts) and now 8 mos

GF he can have milk without any problems. Three months just wasn't

quite enough for my son, but everyone's different. I think it just

depends how long it takes your son's tummy to heal before you

reintroduce dairy. I don't know if Lactaid would be something you

can use, but if you can, try it! I hope this helps a little.

Yes. I have no doubt that if you remove casein you will see

dramatic differences - I mean, he is still three and will still act

like a three year old, but it will be within a more normal range.

Give it a shot, and be sure to email me if you see a difference. I

have had a number of 'in real life' friends do this with huge

changes in their kids. You should try it for at least a month

before chucking it. Casein is in quite a bit of stuff, including

things like tuna fish, so you want to get as familar with the

variations like you did with gluten. Check out these sites:
