Guest guest
Jen, Welcome to the list. Sounds like you have been through a lot. As for your sore nipples you might try hot water soaks. Get a washcloth and run hot water on it as hot as you can stand on your inner wrist and then put on your nipples until the washcloth cools. This helps to increase the pain threshold. Wendi http://www.lactivist.com breastfeeding info & resources My Intro Hello all. My name is and DH is Kenny and our 6 week old little girl is Abby. I was hell bent on bf'ing and its a long story (arent they all?) but we are just getting around to nursing. Her glucose was 30 points too low when she was born so they gave her a bottle of glucose water (they didnt even check with me or tell me anything) and then our problems started. I was trying to nurse her but she refused. I started pumping and we were giving her EBM then we started with the Lacation Consultant. We have been 4 times so far and each time she's weighed after a milk transfer she's getting more than the time before. We moved to nipple shields and onto just the breast. She had only gained 6 oz in 2 weeks so I started letting her nurse for however long she wanted (we were still using the shield at the time). I was nursing her for 1 to 1.5 hours every 2 hours and I was miserable. Finally one night at 4:00 am she had eaten for an hour and was fighting me tooth and nail I asked DH to go and make me a bottle of formula. Wouldnt you know that that night I tried to nurse her with the shield and she nursed like a champ? Then I switched her to the other breast and tried without the shield and again she nursed like she'd known how to do it all the time! We decided to give her EBM and Formula as a supplement. She usually gets formula only when we are out and about. She has been gaining much better since we are giving her the EBM and not just nursing her. I have been pumping and just giving her the EBM most of the time. She will nurse for about 10 minutes per breast then drops me and wont re-latch on that breast. She'll switch to the other though. I have only been nursing her at night before bed then we " top her off " with EBM from the bottle. I am starting to get real sore and that's when I slack off on the nursing sessions. I have lanolin but it really doesnt help the pain...any suggestions? I must have a really low threshold for pain or something. I'd appreciate any tips you guys could give me. Thanks in advance and I hope to learn a lot from this list. Guest guest
Margaret and Jen, This is just something I learned from an LC specifically for reducing the pain threshold. From what I understand Lansinoh is just for moist wound healing not for general soreness. Warm saline soaks are very good for soothing sore nipples. Like Margaret said correcting an improper latch is really important because if the baby isn't latching correctly then the soreness won't go away. Wendi http://www.lactivist.com breastfeeding info & resources Re: My Intro Actually, hot water can really dry out nipples and increase soreness. My lc and my books advise avoiding hot water for this reason. Is the lanolin you're using called Lansinoh? It should really help. If it isn't, be sure your positioning is correct and that his lips are flanged and taking in the areola as well as the nipple. Are your nipples cracked or just sore? Guest guest
Hi, Wendi, do you mean *increasing* the pain threshold? I can see how hot water would do that, but it can also be drying. Saline soaks would be even more drying. Lansinoh can be great for moist wounds, but also works very well for just plain soreness, as it moisturizes (prevents cracking) and eases the pain on latch for many women, including me. Guest guest
Margaret, Yes that is what I meant. Saline soaks are a common treatment of sore nipples by LC's. It is true that individual differences might vary but the general feeling in the LC population is that Lansinoh doesn't solve the problem of sore nipples, yes it can be moisturizing but it is designed for moist wound healing. Saline soaks (if they are isotonic saline) don't dry because they are the same saline solution that is in the body and so the homeostatic osmosis doesn't happen. If it is a very salty solution or just plain water they could be drying. The hot water treatment is specifically for women that don't have dry, cracked nipples but are having no other problem but pain and are in need of " increasing " the pain threshold. Guest guest
Margaret, Obviously not! I have known of several people, including myself that have reacted to Lansinoh. I know several LC's that swear that is impossible because it is so pure but I have my experience, just as you had yours. Obviously finding the problem is the bottom line. As for hurting yourself with the hot water, I was careful to say test it on the wrist first. Hopefully, everyone on this list will use common sense and not continue to use something that is making the problem worse. Each woman has a different body and different experience and sometimes the " silliest " things work for some women. It was merely a suggestion, I didn't think that I was going to have to defend it to the end of the earth. Sorry for the suggestion, as you know I certainly wouldn't suggest something that I thought was going to hurt someone or make the situation worse. I, honestly, can't even remember the original post and just don't have the time to go and find it. I thought at the time of reading the original post that it was a viable option to try as it sounded like she had tried a lot already. I also have fair hair and got sore nipples, which Lansinoh made worse, should I stop recommending that? The hot water suggestion is not one that I would usually recommend but it seemed worth trying (as far as I can remember). As for the saline soaks I will try to find the research study backing them up. Wendi http://www.lactivist.com breastfeeding info & resources Re: My Intro Wendi, Well I guess not all lc's think alike. I had a serious problem with sore nipples with both kids. I am blonde (as most you might remember!) and have very fair skin. . Lc #1 advised what you're advising, and before I knew it I had sore and cracked nipples that took a long time to heal. LC #2 was horrified I had been doing saline soaks and advised the Lansinoh. Yes, they were cracked but the Lansinoh helped long after the cracks healed. They help with general soreness and can prevent further trauma to the nipple. With my second son, I used the Lansinoh as soon as I had any soreness -- no cracks -- and they helped the soreness dramatically and I never got to the point of having cracked nipples again. In terms of using hot water to increase the pain threshold, this just seems silly. I mean you could hurt yourself in lots of ways that would increase pain threshold, but I don't see the sense in that. Before resorting to that I would try to find the source of the pain and remedy that. Margaret

Guest guest
Wendi, I'm certainly sorry if I stepped on your toes. You don't have to defend anything to the ends of the earth. I agree with what you say about how we all have different bodies and need to use common sense. Of course we do. I was just trying to offer a different pespective, based on my several years of nursing, much research, and many hours spent helping other women breastfeed succesfully. I know you've had a lot more experience than I have, though, so I'll defer to you from now on. Margaret Wendi wrote: > Margaret, > > Obviously not! Guest guest
Hi again, I forgot to mention that you don't need to go looking for the research study on saline soaks. They made my problem much worse, but if you've had good experience with them then great. Margaret Margaret Potter wrote: > Wendi, > > I'm certainly sorry if I stepped on your toes. Guest guest
Margaret, I posted to you privately but I wanted to say this on the list. NO ONE has to feel that they need to defer to me. I want this list to be inclusive of all of us. I don't want anyone to feel that they shouldn't post or can't offer their perspective. I have been having a very stressful week and am extremely busy and trying to stay up on everything. I apologize for my post and hope that everyone here feels that they can post comfortably. Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to the group. My name is LaGonda. I am an Assistan Kindergarten Teacher. I'm 41 yo. I am a mother of 3 and married to the same great guy for 24 years. I will be starting the SBD for the second time in two weeks. (waiting for payday)I tried it out about 6 weeks ago and just couldn't stick to it. I have to get my mind set right. And it will also help to be able to talk with others who are on it and have some where to ask questions. I am glad to see all the recipes that are listed by phases. I could be tempted to experiment. I am the type who is a little leary of getting off a set plan, (ie. the already planned menu in the book). My first couple of questions are: Could someone give me some advise on which SBD recipes can be done ahead and frozen? It will help me to be able to just pull something out of the freezer and heat it up. Also ould dinner menus be used for lunch. For example if I had grilled salmom and asparagus for dinner and had a serving left over could I have it for lunch the next day? Thanks for any help and I'm looking forward to success.
