Guest guest
Well gang, I just returned from our annual family vacation, which is a week on a farm in lovely Mendocino County, California. The roads and walkways are totally uneven and I don't think there's a flat surface in the place except for the dining hall and inside the cabin. In addition to negotiating the walking paths around the farm, my wife and I went on four hikes in the woods, each about 2-3 hours each, up hills and down dales, over fallen logs, ducking under branches, hopping and tripping over rocks, and slipping and sliding through mud. I also swam in the river a few times. There was also the customary two miler along the road after each meal every day. Throughout, I didn't feel a moment's hip pain, and it was the first time since we've been going there (1990) that I've been in that pain-free state. I still have some adductor muscle tightness but am addressing that. It was the first time I've been able to do a kick without pain while swimming breast stroke in maybe 15 or 20 years. Encouraged by this, yesterday, I began to turn up the heat a little in my karate training. I had a little trouble with side kicks but my roundhouse kicks are up to mid-chest level on both sides and I even managed one head kick with a bit of a stretch. I also managed about 15 min. of sparring which was apportioned about 75% hand techniques and 25% leg techniques (kicking, sweeping, blocking), which is up from 98% hands and 2% legs pre-BHR. It's simply amazing what you can do with your hands when you can actually move forwards, sideways and backwards. My students didn't know what hit them! I just looooooooove these new hip surfaces.
