Guest guest
Going GF helped me lose some stubborn pounds. But I had been doing the Weight Watchers Flex plan before diagnosis. (Funny how adding " whole wheat " everything to my diet seemed to make me feel worse. " Funny " in retrospect. At the time I was *NOT* laughing!) But going GF definitely made it easier to take off weight. I was not gnawingly hungry and obsessed with the next bite like I was before going GF. I guess when you're not absorbing food properly, your body keeps saying " eat more! " Like the obsessed at a slot machine: surely the NEXT bite will satisfy me. Once I went GF, food satisfied me a LOT more. I wasn't hungry all the time. I wasn't obsessed. The weight came off more easily. > > was anyone over weight when they were diagnosed with cd and then lost > down to a healthy weight after adpoting a gf diet? just wondering. > Ive been about 30 lbs over weight for a few years and havent been able > to loose it. Guest guest
I worked at a fat camp one summer (actually I think that was my trigger) and when I got home I could not stop gaining weight but we all just assumed it was because I was getting more than 900 calories per day. I ended up about 40 pounds heavier and unable to lose any of it for 2 years. I would work out, walk for miles a day (between classes on campus), eat only salads and nothing would happen. As soon as I was diagnosed (in July) I lost over 20 pounds in a month without doing anything. I've been steady at that weight since then. I'm at the high end of healthy weight for my height right now which is probably why the weight loss stabled off, I should probably lose some, but I just haven't been motivated. I tried to lose it for so long with no luck that I just can't get over the mental hurdle of thinking it won't help this time either.LaURi* C wrote: was anyone over weight when they were diagnosed with cd and then lost down to a healthy weight after adpoting a gf diet? just wondering.Ive been about 30 lbs over weight for a few years and havent been able to loose it. Guest guest
Diet alone is only marginally effective. The only way to really accelerate weight loss is to combine diet (later transforming that into a lifestyle change - stop eating junk, even GF junk), and exercise (IMHO, 4-5 days a week 40-60 minutes of target heart rate cardio per session coupled with a day or two of weight training). --E cd and weight losswas anyone over weight when they were diagnosed with cd and then lost down to a healthy weight after adpoting a gf diet? just wondering.Ive been about 30 lbs over weight for a few years and havent been able to loose it. Just wondering if any one was in this boat. I did, initially. I actually had to start eating meat in order to *stop* losing weight after I lost 30 pounds and my body wasn't putting any on at all. I'm back to vegetarianism (my body had issues with the meat). I'm hoping I don't start losing too much weight again. ygg
Guest guest
Hi Lauri, Welcome to the gluten challenge club! I’m on my way there also. Couple more weeks of gluten to go and the pounds are coming right back on. I lost weight with Weight Watchers also (Core plan though) which is what led me to suspect gluten intolerance. As long as I stayed on the relatively low-carb, low gluten Core plan, I lost weight and felt better. For this gluten challenge, I’m eating more processed white flour than I have eaten in the past year or more and geez do I see a difference in my waistline. Can’t wait to just be practically grain free again. I think it’s important though, that when you go gf you don’t go crazy for gluten free flours. They turn into sugar in your blood stream just like bleached white flour does. Whole foods, whole grains, lean protein seem to be the best path to a healthy weight. And, when you stop feeling awful, exercise. I like yoga. I hope I’ll get aerobic when I’m gf again and have some energy again. Laurie lbilyeu@... Guest guest
I lost 40lb in about 6 months GF and CF, but that's I believe because of the combination of getting healthier and eating low carb. It certainly made gluten free an easier lifestyle change to make. If I was eating all the high carb stuff my 8 year old daughter (who's GFCF also) eats, I'd likely be putting on weight (wholy smokes there are some really amazing baked goods that my daughter just gobbles up). I've pretty much stabilized now because I have increased my carbs to more of a maintenance level but that just means adding in more fruits. I'm also allergic to cane sugar, rice, potatoes, arrowroot and tapioca so there's really no way I can end up doing lots of carbs and remain gluten free (I challenge you try finding a GFCF packaged food free of those). I eat pretty much no processed foods as you can imagine. I'm eating like a horse, but maintaining my weight. I go through over a dozen eggs per week by myself to give you an idea. I also go through soy nuts and sunflower seeds like there's no tomorrow (very high calories in the quantity I eat). I'm 5'4 " and I weigh 135lb and loving being in the best shape of my life. Guest guest
Holy Toledo Trudy! Talk about your body demanding that you treat it in a healthy way! “Don’t eat that nasty stuff or else!!!” I’m so glad you’re feeling so fit and healthy. Now about those allergies—how did you have them diagnosed? I think I’ll want to pursue such ideas, but want the most credible tests… Laurie lbilyeu@... Guest guest
My GI doc ordered the food allergy blood tests from Great Smokies Labs. That was the starting point only. I found out the milk (lactose, casein and whey), rice, cane sugar and many others from that. Oddly, gluten and wheat were negative even though I hadn't gone gluten free yet. They don't test tapioca or arrowroot. I figured those out myself when I got sick from foods where those were the only ingredients that I hadn't safely eaten before. www.GSDL.com is the Great Smokies web site. Your doctor has to register with them to order the tests. They can register for free and get the testing kits for free, but they do have to register. My allergist was interested when I told him about the allergy tests but he works for a large corporation and the corporation doesn't allow him to register with other labs. I am doing significantly better, but I'm still having trouble cutting down all the internal inflamation. My GI doc is a bit stumped. We're starting to try some herbal remmidies (l-glutamine, licorice root, etc) to cut inflamation. I'll see how that goes. It's starting to look like I may also have some form of colitis. I'm suspecting Lymphocitic colitis which is a form of Microscopic colitis. More recent articles I've read on it actually make it sound like MC is another extention of celiac so who knows. FYI - I used the fact that I have to bake everything for myself from scratch as an excuse to buy myself a whole bunch of Pampered Chef Stoneware - gotta find positives where you can. Guest guest
Thank you, I’ll check that lab out. And I also think that any excuse to buy new kitchen goodies is a good excuse. Curious about the inflammation—How’s your omega-3 intake? That’s the fatty acid that turns off our inflammation response when it isn’t needed anymore. We’re pretty much all deficient in the US unless we’re intentionally bolstering it. Just wondering if that might be important for you? Laurie lbilyeu@... Guest guest
I don't take any omega-3 or omega-6 supplements. The only ones I've found are in gel-caps and I'm allergic to both beef and pork. I do eat fish at a minimum 3-4 times per week (usually more but that the minimum). I try my best to buy the wild stuff because I understand it's higher in omegas than farm raised. I also try to add flax meal whenever I bake, but I don't end up baking much for myself (it's such a pain). I try to add it to salads when I think of it. You're the second person in the last couple of days to suggest EFAs. Hmmmmmm. Maybe I should start listening? I believe Kirkman Labs sells some Nordic Naturals EFAs that are just liquid (no cap). I already get my probiotics from them. I've still got malabsorption problems going on. My last labs showed defficiency in both A & D. I think my B-12 was just inside the ok range but barely. I'm on supplements for them but we'll see how that goes. I'm using beta carotene for the A because I couldn't find a retanol that wasn't in a gelcap. I know, the EFA would cover that. I've really gotta look into EFAs. Trudy in NH > > Thank you, I'll check that lab out. Guest guest
I was not overweight when I was diagnosed. I was overwhelmed by the whole process of eating gluten free and spent my first year drinking my calories (lots of soda) and chips. Evenso, I lost 10 pounds that first year. I then decided that that was pretty silly and cut out all of that - since I hadn't eaten that way before being diagnosed. I tend to eat a lot of salads and use nuts and raisins for fillers. I love the cranberry trail mix and the gluten free corn thins. I also tend to exercise when I can. Basically I feel that I can eat healthy and have a gluten free diet. Good luck. Guest guest
Sounds like you’re already on the omega 3 path. I’ll be interested to hear more results. My favorite (current) source of information on Omega-3 and inflammation is in Weil’s new book “Healthy Aging”. His explanation is very clear. (You definitely don’t want omega 6 supplements—we get too much already—it’s about balance.) About flax seeds—flaxseed oil is very delicate and oxidizes quickly (goes rancid). Baking with flax seeds adds fiber, but the cooking destroys the oil. Likewise, the straight flax seed oil should never be heated. Fresh ground seeds tossed in the salad or on a potato or cereal is the best bet. Laurie lbilyeu@... Guest guest
I was about 15 pounds overweight when I was diagnosed; when I went gf I lost 20 pounds without trying--of course I didn't know what to eat-so I was eating lots of rice, chicken, fruits and vegies. I felt great and had tons of energy. Unfortunately in the past year I've gained almost 25 pounds--most of that in the last 6 months-I was diagnosed subclinical hypothyroid in November, this is with eating no more than 1400 calories most days(I splurge some times);I do gain if I've been glutened. I work out 5 days a week, more once the pool opens. Its frustrating to work so hard and be gaining. Dana

Guest guest
How long does flax seed oil last once opened? I've considered using it or grape seed oil for my salad oil. I've heard grape seed oil is pretty good too. I just looked up Dr. Weil's web site. Based on what he says about omega-3's, I think I'm getting enough from my diet. Of course with my malabsorption problems who knows what my body's doing with it? It's an interesting read. Thanks! Trudy in NH > > Sounds like you're already on the omega 3 path. Guest guest
You can get flax (or fish) oil in a container, or use freshly ground flax as a daily supplement (raw, not cooked, as heat destroys the omega-3's and many vitamins) - lets you supplement those Omega-3's (nearly no one needs more omega 6) without worrying about gelcaps. > -----Original Message----- > > I don't take any omega-3 or omega-6 supplements.
