I tried GNC's liquid vitamins prior to pregnancy and I almost lost all

my cookies LOL, the consistency was so thick and the taste was simply

unbearable . I found some liquid vitamins online and they are based in

cranberry extract so it taste like taking a swig of crabnerry juice . I keep

it chilled in the fridge and take a shot glass full which is 1 ounce every

day. Email me privately if you need any further info on the ingredients or

whatever :)

Hello,

Raisin Bran works very well for constipation. One serving has 8 grams of

protein. I have also tried prunes and laxatives, but nothing does the trick

for me like Raisin Bran.

I started getting constipated in the first trimester and it had

nothing to do with my vitamin regiment (I still only take my usual

triple dose of children's vitamins and the occassional folic acid

tablet if I have a day where I don't get enough from my diet - lab

tests have all been great, iron levels normal).

At first the Raisin Bran worked great for me too. Then I realized

that all I had to do was switch from the lactaid milk back to regular

milk and that did the trick. Since surgery milk has caused diarrhea,

so drinking it again has combated the constipation really well. I

take a little 16 ounce carton with me to work everyday and drink it

with lunch.

Hope you find the answer!

Hi , First off - you NEVER need to be sorry for getting off of the subject of Lupus. That is one of the very best things about this group. Yes, Lupus is our focal and most important agenda, but there are so many other things that beset us. And there's the emotional aspect of this. And - we need to laugh. So, no more being sorry for not talking about Lupus.

Honey, I sure hope you can't get lactulose syrup OTC. That stuff can be dangerous to the integrity of the bowel and must only be used under a doctor's supervision. There are other things though that you can buy OTC to use for emergencies only. Mag Citrate is that horrible liquid bowel prep that comes in the green bottle. I keep that on hand. Saturday I drank an entire bottle (6 or 8oz) of it and still no results by 9 hours so I used 2 glycerin suppositories. It took all night, but I finally got my bowel emptied. I have my doctor's OK to use the bowel prep. If you go to the pharmacy and tell them you need a bottle of liquid bowel prep that you drink before having a colonoscopy they will know exactly what you want. Please though don't use something that harsh without an OK from your doctor. The glycerin suppositories are just like using mineral oil. Be sure to place it against the bowel wall and no inside of what you want to get rid of.

Often times we don't realize that by using these different unnatural things to help with bowel elimination that we are actually causing harm. Used often enough and the bowel's peristaltic movement will have problems. I have know people who used these products which also include exlax, to the point that the only way their bowel would work is to continue taking the products which then frequently leads to becoming impacted and needing to have the bowel manually evacuated. You do NOT want to go there. So, Please before taking harsh laxatives which these products all are, talk to your doctor. There are stool softeners and bulk fiber you can take that help the bowel work naturally. There are also some foods which help. A friend recently told me that a couple tablespoons of Molasses would do the job.

I hope this helps. - if you have a problem and you think there is a possibility someone in this group can have some information for you - or if all we can offer is our concern - never hesitate to let us know. Hugs - a B one of the moderators

constipation

,

can you buy the lactulose syrup over the counter?

Warning - this may gross some of you out!

I have horrible problems with constipation. Back in the summer I was so constipated that I was literally loony! I had been in the hospital with pancreatitis attacks back to back for a total of 11 days. I was on MAJOR pain meds and obviously very inactive. Also, was mostly on liquids so no roughage at all. While I was in the hospital they got my blood thinners way too high. My PT was up to 52 and normal is around 13. You could literally just touch me and it would leave a bruise. My legs were solid bruises. Anyway, the day after I got out of the hospital, a kid rear ended me. He hit us so hard that I got an instant major headache from the jolt. Of course, I also began having major pancreas pain, too. Because of my medical history, they took me to the hospital by ambulance. I was checked out at the hospital. The labs were okay but abdominal x-rays showed I was pretty 'full of it' and dehydrated. After being given IV fluids and med for pain and nausea, I was sent home with a bottle of mag citrate. I drank it as soon as we got home at about 1 a.m. I figured I might as well get it over with. Well, about 6 a.m., I'd had no BM and I started throwing up. I threw up several times but then felt better so hubby went on to work. That's pretty much the last that I really remember of that day until my stepdaughter called me around 3 p.m. to get a phone number. I remember being on the phone with her and trying over and over to give her the number. I'd start giving her the number and then I'd be off in left field talking about who knows what! I have no idea how many times I tried giving her the number before I finally told her that I didn't know what was wrong with me, that I just couldn't concentrate so I'd have to give her the number later. She asked if I had taken too many pain pills and I told her I hadn't had pain med since 6 a.m. Thankfully, she called my hubby right away, who called me and then my mom. By the time my mom got to my house, I was vomiting again and I'm pretty sure this time there was feces in the vomit. Sorry if this is grossing anyone out! Of course, my family is all thinking I've got a head injury from the wreck the day before. I kept kind of going in and out of it. I'd be okay for a minute and then just off in left field the next. My mom and stepdad took me to the hospital. Right before they took me, I did have just a very small amount of diarrhea. I had to close my eyes during the drive because several times I nearly yelled at my stepdad that he was running off the road. I was having double vision or something and it looked like he was driving on the grass, the next minute looked like he was going to run into the car in the next lane.

As far as I know, I had not had anything to eat or drink the whole day. There were no dirty dishes and I honestly have no memory of what I did from 6 a.m. til 3 p.m. that day.

At the hospital, they did a ct scan of my head, lab work, and more abdominal x-rays. CT scan was fine - no head injury. Labs showed I was even more dehydrated and x-rays showed no change - still 'full of it' - DUH - hadn't had a BM to speak of in close to 2 weeks! Ends up that I was out of my gourd from being constipated and dehydrated. My brain was literally poisoned from the toxins not being cleared out of my body. This is what happens to people with end stage liver disease. They often have to take lactoluse 3 times a day to keep the toxins from messing with their brain.

After they filled me full of IV fluids at the hospital, I was more or less coherent. They sent me home with a prescription for peri colace pills. I took those pills and still had no results. I did a fleets enema the next day and finally around 6 p.m. the next day things started moving.

This was one of the scariest things I've ever had happened. Once I was coherent enough to realize how out of it I had been, it was terrifying! It's an experience I hope to never have again!

Well, my original intent was simply to ask about getting lactoluse. I've been on pain medication daily since the pancreatitis attacks started up again in July 2002. I have IBS and even when I was healthy, constipation could be a problem at times. You add pain meds, liver disease, and pancreatitis to the mix and constipation is a major problem at times for me! Having chronic pancreatitis, it doesn't take much to set my pancreas off and cause an attack. I've had several attacks which were probably brought on by being constipated because it seems anything going on in my belly or really anywhere in my body can set off my crazy pancreas!

Well, sorry to get so off the subject of lupus! I do really appreciate all the tips for help with constipation.
