You go Rita! I admit I have written more of the negatives but I have done a

few positives now and then... But you are right, we need to hear more of

the " good days " . Sometimes I haven't because your reading about a bad time

for someone and you don't feel it's right too. Other things that at least

for me is that I have only really had this for a little over a year and it's

been very aggressive, so far I have had a lot more negatives... Oops, there

I go again, analyzing why I'm doing what I do...sorry, back to your

wonderful letter ;-).

Yes, will try to put in the upbeat things more often also. I bet you will

sleep well tonight girl! Oh, one more thing, with my laid up do you hire

out ;-).

Of course we have " bad " days!! But if we didn't have PLS wouldn't most

of us be complaining about something else. Thats just the nature of

the beast. Yes, I am tired, but it's a good tired. Soup came out

great!

Positive Side Of Life

Hi All:

I have some thoughts I wish ti share with all of you and would

appreciate some feedback. As most of you already know, I have had PLS

for over 30 years. I am 67 (ugh) and still going strong (as possible).

Today my husband of 43 years went to the dentist, I usually go with him,

but the weather here in NH is rotten, cold and icy. The last thing he

said to me as he left was " gee I hate leaving you by yourself " , and off

he went. Now I could have sat and watched TV, and do my counted

cross-stitch, but " NO " . I got up and did the following:

1. Cleaned the bathroom (which he normally does)

2. Cleaned the microwave (which he never does)

3. Cleaned the coffee pot inside and out (which he swishes the water in

the pot, and thinks it's clean)

4. Vacuumed my apartment (which he does)

5. Polished my dining room table (which he does)

I am sittng here sweating up a storm, probably lost a few pounds which I

certainly can afford to do. My point it lets not only share the

negative of our disease but how about the positive, no matter how

trivial the accomplishment might be. I am sitting he looking at how

nice everything looks, and am so pleased that when (who will be 80

this year) comes home will be " shocked " to see what I have done. I

would never attempt to do anything that I am no capable of doing that

would cause me to hurt myself. It makes me feel good to share all of

this with you, and hope you don't mind. I have always tried to inspire

people to live the best they can. We don't know how lucky we are to

have PLS instead of ALS or Cancer or some devastating disease like that.

Now I am going to make a batch of tortalini soup. So thanks for

listening, and I hope I have helped just one of you. God Bless!

Thanks Yolanda, usually I get myself in trouble when I express my

opinion. I held a dinner party here the Saturday before New Years, and

we had 9 close friends. I set the tables from my wheelchair, and we had

candle's and wine and we had a blast. Our daughter dropped by (not

knowing) and said to me " Ma you never stop amazing me " . That made me

feel 10 feet tall. She never would have said that if I were " normal "

(even though I was amazing then, people are more aware of it now) LOL!!!

It's a matter of choice on how we live our life with PLS, and I have

never ever let it stop me.

Thanks again!

Your post and all the other's that I have received has given goose

bumps. Your story reminded me of few years ago, and I drove to

Maine (an hour from here), and we stopped to get an ice cream at a

tourist site called Nubble Lighthouse. The weather was spectacular, sky

clear, very little wind, scuba diver's. Just like a picture postcard.

As I sat at a picnic table enjoying the day, a van pulled into the

parking lot, and it was full of kids with all kinds of disabilities.

hey got out of the van and one girl caught my eye. She was absolutely

beautiful, long black hair, milk white skin. She sat at the table

beside ours, and I noticed her head was down sorta looking at the

ground. She was probably 14 or 15, and then I realized she was blind.

I said to myself " how sad it was that she was so young and had to miss

all the beauty around us, and how lucky I was to have had so many good

years to enjoy my family, and my country, and I had been so privileged

to had been able to do and SEE so much before my diagnosis " . Not that

she didn't have quality of life being blind, but I think you understand

what I mean.

Here I go babbling again, but I think it is just as important to the new

people here, to know there is more to coping with a disease then how

much Baclofan we all take, and that is how we live our lives and adjust

to the changes both physical and mental.

icoulnt help but notice your statement about your daughter saying you amazed

her . My daughter and son in law came by Christmas and my daughter was looking

at the new flr i put in the laundry rm. Myself and stated you amaze me dad im

proud of you .Like im a little child and getting praise for a job well done .

Not that im not thankful but it reminds me of a saying ive used for years .You

spend the first 30- years raising your children and they spend the next 30-

years raising you telling you things like when you need a hair cut how your

eating etc. AMAZING GEO

Rita,

You are right on about that. I think a positive attitude is one of the things

you have to acquire to help fight the disease. I know some days are worse, and

I'm down when I can see skills slipping away, but then I have good days and it

helps everyone else so much, I want to try to be more positive. As I've said

before, when I worked, people started to avoid me when I cried about everything

and got upset so easily. Of course my meds have helped that too as well as

quitting work, but it just helps everyone, especially family and where would we

be without them?

Regards, Sue Ellen

ps Charlie is exactly the same way about the coffeemaker and m/w!

Good for you Rita!! I really think PLS has given us more strength and

determination than some people give us credit for. Am sure your husband

must be very proud of you.

Take care.
