Guest guest
Kyla, I know I don't fit in this list, but this sounds TOTALLY familiar to me. I even quit going to the doc because he always said, nothing there! For me, this ear pain is part of the mycoplasma infection which seems to center in my sinuses and ears. As long as I stay on antibiotics I have no ear pain. The ear pain returns as about the third symptom I get when I go off antibiotics and relapse. I don't know how this relates to you - just my experience. a C. > From: " Kyla MacKenzie " <celticfox@...> > > Hello all, > > I had to go to my doctor today due to severe pain in my right > ear. Guest guest
Kyla, My son gets this kind of swelling of the outer ear and canal, sometimes with a crusty discharge, sometimes not. They always try to give him amoxicillin for it, to which it never responds at all, or only partially. so I have to take him back, and it clears up right away when they give him erythromycin, or once when he got zithromax. He also is showing other symptoms of what may be developing rheumatic disease. I think the two are related. I've had a lot of trouble with the same kind of ear infections myself in the past, but not any obvious ones lately. It sure doesn't sound like descriptions I've heard of TMJ pain before. More like a lingering infection from when you had the pus before. Just my armchair opinion, and worth what it cost you, LOL. Follow your instincts, and try to get it treated as an infection, would be my advice. How's it going with the joint pain? Guest guest
Hello Kyla, I had an incident several years ago involving the ears. My ear canals were majorly swollen to the point of being shut off. At first they were slightly swollen and then gradually got worse over a few days to a week. eventually my hearing started getting bad. The lobes were sore to the touch and my jaw had some pain in front of the ear. Finally went to the doctor and he said it was an outer ear infection. He also said it can be easy to get. For instance, your ear itches inside and you may scratch it with your fingernail, an object, or like I stupidly did the cap end of an ink pen. Anyway these objects are just plain dirty and they're a no-no. He treated me by giving me oral antibiotics. He said this must be Augmentin (500 milligrams 3x daily) it's the only thing that works really well. Also he gave me some liquid drops that I think contained an antibiotic and something to help the swelling . they were called Neomycin drops. But before I could use the drops (because my ear canal was swollen shut) the doctor had to insert a wick , yes a wick , in my ear so the drops would drain down the wick and get into the ear properly. This was realitively painless and helped 100%. Within a day or two things were much better. When the ear canal opened I could pull the wick out. My doc stressed most other ways of treating would only make the infection clear slightly and then return with a vengeance. One fellow he treated wound up in the hosp. with his whole head swollen in bad condition. Don't leave it untreated. My advice ,Talk to the doc. again or another one. Get a second opinion, if in doubt. Your symptoms sounded so familiar just had to put in my 2 cents worth. Hope this is helpful . Any further questions feel free to ask. Take care and good luck ! Guest guest
Kyla, I don't know how much help this is, because you seem to be getting advice all over the board, and I'm about to muddy the waters further. Is it possible that this is an inflammation of the parotid gland? I have RA and Sjogren's, and when I was on antibiotics originally, for four months, this was one of my herx reactions. After it went away, my Sjogren's started to improve. Many months ago someone else described a similar pain and another writer explained it was probably a swollen parotid gland. You might be able to find it in the archives. I'm actually looking forward to this problem, now that I'm on Minocin again. Guest guest
Kyla . I forgot to add this to my message. When my doc looked in my ear there was also no sign of infection ( pus, drainage, etc...) only a small amount of fluid starting to build because the ears wouldn't drain. Interestingly enough he said this inner fluid could eventually lead to an inner ear infection if it was not allowed to drain. Thank goodness it did'nt. Two infections at once ?? Guest guest
Liz, you might try oil of oregano (North American Herb & Spice) or garlic oil with mullein next time your son has this problem. You apply the oil three times day, rubbing it just inside the ear. Ethel " Liz G. " wrote: > > From: " Liz G. Guest guest
Kayla, this comment from Deb sort of fits what I was describing in my case. It is not a clear cut ear infection or any doctor could recognize it. These are common things and docs see and treat ear infections and ear canal infections every day. What I had was pain but no visible signs of infection. I really think the infection was in the carotid artery which is often inflamed in CFS, probably in other similar conditions. The pain radiated up the side of my neck and into my ear and face. At times it was worse in one area than another. IT never went away for about a year. Now, after years of antibiotics, I rarely have this pain. I can't diagnose your case, but don't be surprised if the docs don't find any infection or TMJ. Then you will KNOW that you don't know!!! a Carnes > From: dav0920@... > > Kyla, I don't know how much help this is, because you seem to be getting advice all over the board, and I'm about to > muddy the waters further. Guest guest
Joyce, I can't tell for you, but it's something to think about. The pain in the carotid artery is fairly common in CFS patients. In my case I knew mine was coming from the mycoplasma infection. You can get tested for mycoplasma at the research labs. It has to be a PCR test as your body doesn't form antibodies to mycoplasma inside your cells. The same problem occurs when diagnosing Lyme. The little critters are hidden within the cells and don't show in ordinary tests. I don't know if it is worth your money to get tested. The treatment if you are positive is the same antibiotics y'all are already taking. That's why I like this list! a Carnes > Hi a, > > I have the same pain in my ear and side of my head and neck.
