Guest guest
Abraham's Twerski's brother, Dr. Benzion Twerski, is a psychologist. He is also pro-12 Step. See his, 5758 (Jewish year) article, " Orthodox Youth and Substance Abuse, " Jewish Action, Vol. 58, # 2. The father, of course, was a very devout Milwaukee Hasidic rabbi, and the sons inherited, it seems, his fervor. Again, I think it doubtful that just 'ignorance' explains why psychiatrists, psychologists, and rabbis - all with much experience with substance users and other troubled people - are adopting the 12- sTep worldview. I think, instead, that the 12-Step worldview is attractive to certain types of Americans, Jewish or Goy. Isn't it worth exploring the reach and depth of this attraction, and then trying to account for it? Is denying reality preferible?
Guest guest
I do not 'deny reality'. Rav A. Twerski and his brother (probably also a Rav -- rabbi -- ) are infatuated with steppism and believe it is compatible with certain Orthodox ideology. I knew this before I joined this list and before I heard of Diener. I still would like to know either of the Twerskis' familiarity with secular alternatives, and if they think Jews should reject them in favor of stepping. I do agree that it is a sad and yes, *dangerous* trend that so many people in this country, both Jewish and Gentile, are being sucked up into the 12-step vacuum. You're right, I ought to ask WHY the Twerskis of the nation are getting infatuated with steppism. I am willing to hear your speculations on this. However, my main interest is reaching the " masses " to inform them about alternatives. ~Rita > > Abraham's Twerski's brother, Dr. Benzion Twerski, is a > psychologist. He is also pro-12 Step.
