Hi everyone.

I have just been diagnosed as a celiac and have a question about going

out to the bar (I am just about to enter law school). I know I cant

drink beer and most vodkas, but I was told that I could drink things

like rum and coke (is this true?). However, are there certain rums

that I should not drink, and are there certain juices from the bar

that should not be drinking (and if so, does using those 'hoses' at

the bar infect the drinks?) Also, what about redbull? If anyone knows

this stuff PLEASE let me know so I can still go out and party with my

friends. Thanks a lot.

I don't know about Red Bull, but most alcohol is considered safe because of

the distillation process. I can vouch for testing more than I should (rum,

whiskey, vodka, tequila, baileys, kahlua..) although I know other members

seem to have reactions to some vodkas. As far as beer goes, there are a few

GF ones out there but to me they don't taste like a beer. Woodchuck Ciders

are GF and curb my beer bottle urge :)

As a former waitress/bartender I can't imagine which juices would have

gluten in them (but it's been a while and I'm not saying not to check!!).

As far as the gun goes, as long as nothing with gluten is coming out of it,

it should be OK.

Have fun with your friends :) Celiac won't stop you and some of us (with

young children) can live a little through your exploits :) Ha ha!

Hello, Adam. I got this information from

http://www.enabling.org/ia/celiac/faq.html#alcoholic :

" Wine, rum, tequila, and sake are usually safe as their alcohols do

not generally come from toxic grains. Some vodkas are also okay. [My

note: I have read that Chopin vodka, made from potatoes, is one of the

best (although most expensive?) vodkas available: chopinvodka.com]

However, as with any other ingested product, you should gauge your

reaction and learn as much about your favored brands as possible.

Grain alcohols are one of those controversial items. While the

distillation process should leave no room for glutens to wind up in

the end product, many celiacs do report problems with ingestion. (One

theory is that some of the original " mash " may be added back in at the

end of the process for flavor. This is worth researching with the

manufacturer of your favorite product.)

Many liquors are made with grain alcohol and so may be suspect.

Whiskey, bourbon, gin and rye are definitely off the list, since they

are made with rye and barley. Beer, too, must be avoided, since malt

(usually from barley) is an ingredient. Even rice beers use malt. "

And according to the Red Bull site (see FAQ at

http://www.redbull.com), it is gluten-free.

I'm sure others will have their recommendations for you...My celiac is

only 2 so he has no opinions as yet!

Good luck and have fun!

Irish whiskey on the rocks and gin and tonic are my mainstay drinks. I don't have any issues with either of them, but your mileage may vary.

I think that unsafe alcohol is a comfort thing. Sort of like the fries we've read about for a month. There's conflicting information so do what you feel safe with. I drink most liquors, but avoid the really cheap stuff. I've heard that they add back in some stuff after distilling so it's cheaper to produce...but who knows if that's true, like I said, it's a personal choice. About the juices, I tend to drink straight or mix with soda. I don't think that too many juices would have gluten in it, but I've seen lists of safe juice so something inside tells me that I should avoid other juices. I'm probably just an idiot though and it's nothing to worry about. amhlink wrote: Hi everyone. I have just been diagnosed as a celiac and have a

Just yesterday there was a post on the celiac listserv (formerly the

St. 's list) stating that the poster had contacted Tanqueray and

company states their gin in NOT GF. Guess I'll stick to wine, as that

was the one hard liquor I liked, although I can't remember if I've

drunk any since diagnosis - I average about 2 drinks per year, so it's

hard to keep track of them.;-)

Hi Adam,

I did some research and some experimentation when I first went gf. My

understanding from the most recent information that I found (and there

is a lot of it out there with every opinion under the sun) indicates

that distilled alcohols including gin and grain vodkas are okay as long

as nothing containing gluten has been added back in after

distillation. It's the same principle as with vinegar. Rum, tequila,

sake and wine are gf from the start.

I had a hard time sticking with a potato vodka when I went out, because

it's not readily available at a lot of bars. Now, and even before gf,

gin and vodka are my mainstays. The only things that I avoid are beer

(undistilled), flavored vodkas (because I am too lazy to check the

ingredients), and drinks made with pre-mixed mixers (lazy again).

By the way, when do they give you time to drink in law school?

Good Luck

So, is whiskey and gin etc kind of like the fries thing, where some

people are comfortable with the level of " risk " and some aren't?

Hope so, I don't miss beer but I would miss my VO.

You can drink Vodka made from potato and from grapes. This is slightly outdated information- at recent celiac conferences we

were told that gluten does not survive the distillation process, so

most alcohols are ok, unless they add flavorings afterwards, which i

believe is not terribly common. You may want to check with the

manufacturer, but they may also be laboring under old ways of thinking

about things, so make sure that the reason it contains gluten is that

they added things AFTER distillation, not that the original source may

have contained gluten. Beer is still out because it is processed

differently. (unless you find a special GF beer). Personally my

favorite is hard cider, and the bottle " feels " beer like. Very

satisfying!

Adam-

First, as someone who is about to graduate law school (YAY!), not only

can you make time to drink in law school, but you SHOULD, if you want

to have a prayer of getting through it ;) ha, just kidding, its not as

bad as the stories you will hear. That said, i did drink a lot

throughout... Recently i have had problems with vodka but i dont think

they are necessarily related to gluten. I drink Ketel One with no

problems, generally on the rocks or with soda. I have heard that the

guns are not always safe b/c they are not cleaned properly, but i dont

know if thats true. As most people have said, most alcohols are in

fact safe- except beer of course, but i have found that cider is a nice

alternative when everyone goes out after class in the middle of the day

and i just cant think of drinking vodka at that hour!

Good luck in school!

What, no lunchtime vodka? hahahah...;) (even a cider would be pushing

it for me at that hour, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!)

Now, I have a question. I thought hard cider would be off-limits

since it is made with yeast (maybe they don't use brewer's yeast like

my husband does when he makes it at home. I love an ice-cold hard

cider in the summer. Before my diagnois, I was drinking Twisted Tea

and Mikes Hard Lemonade, which are malt liquor drinks. Are these ok?

By the way, someone mentioned milk and coke. That reminds me of

Lavern and Shirley with the Pepsi and milk. I think I am going to

try this, maybe it will be like an ice cream float or taste like iced

chai. I'll let you know.

If they use a spent brewer's yeast, it would not be gf (same for those that

add malted barley to the mash). So, at home he'd have to switch to a wine

yeast (this and many other things home brewers do is a good reason to avoid

all home brewed cider and wine and mead). If you call on ciders without

malt, you'll find a large number of them are gf (even some that are on tap

now in college towns).

Mikes is definitely not gf -- has malt added. Just as basically all wine and

liquor coolers are not gf, as the malt is added to allow them to be sold as

" beers " under most state laws (some of these are gf in Canada, but almost

never in the US, as they would have to bottle two formulas to be sold in

states that require malt).
