Guest guest
at 8:12 a.m. this morning, ABC Good Morning America has Dr. Guiler on live, along with the patient, talking about his branding of the uterus he did during a laparoscopically assisted vaginal myomectomy. some of the transcript: WEDW 1/28/03 - 8:11 AM... >> Charlie, we do turn now to the surgeon in question, dr. Mike guiler coming to us from lexington, kentucky, the obvious question, doctor, why did you mark mrs. Means' uterus with the letters u.K.? >> Good morning, robin. The procedure i do for minimally invasive surgery is called a laproscopic hysterectomy . We dot first portion through a l aproscope we do through the patient's bellybutton. The remainder is done through the vaginea. In order to better propose patients' safety through the vaginal procedure it's necessary to mark the uterus in a midline fashion and be able to tell left from right. >> Yes, doctor, but u.K., Your initials of your alma mater, it gives the impression that you are playing in the operating room. Why not a generic mark? Why the mark u.K. Of your alma mater? >> Well, robin, it's very important to be able to identify left from right so it has to be an eye symmetrical mark. The university of kentucky gave me my training, medical school training. Residency training and i am very proud of that. I certainly did not mean for that to be demeaning in any way.... Guest guest
Carla, Dr. J. Guiler is a Voluntary Instructor at the University of Kentucky-Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynecology. http://www.mc.uky.edu/obg/People/Faculty/voluntary_faculty.htm Would the " marking " in any way benefit surgical medical residents working with him? Would this, in the eyes of AAGL.org create a " climate of disrespect " or " cavilier attitude " toward the patient and her organs? I'd be willing to take this to UK President, OB/Gyn Surgical Dept., Central Baptist Hosp, where Guiler has privileges, and State of Ky Medical Licensing Board. Before that however, all of the FACTS come in....I'd like to see if the lawsuit gets dismissed on a summary judgment or otherwise...
