---Yes, breast cancer can spread to the thyroid, although it isn't one of the

more common spots for it to do so. How did you get a diagnosis of thyroid

cancer if you haven't had an FNA or other biopsy done? If you have gotten a

definitive diagnosis of " thyroid cancer " and not just a suspicious growth on

your thyroid, then you probably don't have a spread of your breast cancer. I

know that after my FNA my doctors and I practically had a party to celebrate

that what was found were Hurthle cells, not a spread of the breast cancer that I

had had surgery for a year before the FNA. If you can't rule out a spread of

breast cancer until after the surgery, then this must be a very difficult time

for you. There are a number of us on the list who have had both diseases. A

lump on the thyroid doesn't necessarily mean a spread of your breast cancer.

Dear Pat (I hope that's your name :-)

I've never heard of any reports that breast cancer can spread to the thyroid.

There are known links between the two cancers, as yet inconclusive, although

there is some thought that the breast cancer may be caused by the RAI treatment

of thyroid cancer (clearly not the case for you).

Please let us know what stage you are in, in your thyroid cancer

diagnosis/treatment.

Hi Jeane,

I have papilliary cancer, found in the lymph nodes first, then a

small tumour was found in my thyroid gland after it was removed.

I was told by the doctors, that because the cancer was found in my

lymph nodes there was a good chance of it spreading to other parts of

my body, the first likely place would be my lungs.

However I was told, that where-ever the papilliary cancer spread it

would always be papilliary thyroid cancer in the lungs, or breast,

etc. It would not be lung cancer, or breast cancer.

Should the papilliary cancer spread to any other part of my body it

would be treated in exactly the same way, with either surgery,

radioactive therapy or both.

Should I develop breast cancer or lung cancer, they would be a

completely seperate form of cancer unrelated to the thyroid cancer

that I have.

I hope this has helped

I recall reading on the american cancer society's webpage that young women

who had thyca are at greater risk for breast cancer. My doctors have told

me, and it makes sense in a logical manner, that having one type of cancer

puts you at a greater risk for other types of cancer.

The cancer in my lungs was indeed thyroid cancer metastases. Hope this

helps, if not, disregard it. I am a ball of nerves lately! :)

in Ohio

dx w/pap. thyca, well-diff. 11/2000

TT w/pt. neck diss. w/30 cancerous lymph nodes removed on 11/13/2000

RAI's 3/2001, 9/2001, 7/2002

metastases to lungs GONE by 7/2002

3 cancerous tumors left in neck 1/2003

double surgery needed ASAP 3/2003?
