I have looked for a better place to find out the answer to this question, but

felt uncomfortable...when in doubt, return to NCT. If you think you have

had a miscarriage (when you didn't even know you were pregnant), should you

see a doctor?

When I found out that my baby had died, I was keen not to have a D & C. I

discussed this with the

midwife who assured me that providing the bleeding didn't carry on too

excessively (i.e. for more

than 7 days), or wasn't concerning in amount or offensive, that I would be safe

just to allow my

body to miscarry on its own, without medical intervention. I also spoke to the

miscarriage

association and the counsellor there said more or less the same thing.

For the record I bled for 7 days, very much like a normal period albeit

heavier, and when it was

finished I just went on about my business without consulting anyone (although I

wouldn't say

normally for about a month as I was devastated having been actively trying for

12 months).

For me it was the best, most gentle way I could think of to say goodbye to a

baby I had grown

fond of. However I can understand how some people would be freaked by carrying

around a dead

baby for a couple of weeks waiting for the miscarriage to happen. Personal

choice again.

I would say, go and speak to your midwife who will at least be able to reassure

you. I spoke to

mine on the phone several times as I had a run in with the doctors receptionist

about where I

parked my car during this horrible time. Fell to pieces in front of her and was

embarrassed to

go back for a while.

Or contact the miscarriage association. They were fantastic with me, and took

me seriously even

though my family were coping by belittling the fact that the baby was only 7 or

8 weeks (when I

was 11 weeks)

Who is feeling particularly down at the moment as its that time of the year

again.

I would say, yes, to be on the safe side. Not had personal experience, but

I'd want to know if I'd had a miscarriage and make sure that everything had

gone.

Hope that is clear - my brain is a bit woolly - it's too late for me to

think straight.

In the same circumstances, I didn't. I was pretty confident that was

what it was from my experiences working on a gynae ward. The response

I got from my then boyfriend and a close friend was such that I

didn't feel like telling anyone else, still less being poked about. I

bled heavily but 'cleanly' as it were.

One caveat about not getting 'formal' recognition is that it can

allow you not to deal with it at the time, so the emotions pop up

again later at an even less convenient time.

I think (correct me if i'm wrong) that most people have been talking about

times when they *knew* they were pg...when i have m/c * after a pos HPT I

have seen the gp - & had scan to check it was complete (8 weeks ish)

Last month i'm pretty sure i was pg, felt sick, etc just like in my last

pgcy...period about a week overdue...hadn't got round to doing a pg test

when i started bleeding suddenly & heavily & for longer than ususal.

I'm 97% sure that was an early m/c and i didn't bother with the doc when the

bleeding stopped after 8 days. If t had gone on I would have done.

I KW Sue H means about not acknowledging it though.... i have now had 2 or 3

" unofficial " m/cs. Even DH doesn't really count them....but I do.

I find it hard to go to the GP and say " i *think* i was pg but now i'm not "

I feel like i'm time wasting....BUT I SHOULDN'T FEEL LIKE THAT!!!

I'd say go to the GP if you feel it would help or if you bleed for more than

a week (if you don't usually). or are in unusal pain etc

Sorry i've rambled...feeling abit sad now for last time... just got my

period again too....:-(

This is me. I had an undiagnosed m\c in the days b4 tests where available.

It has come home to roost, after reading about other peoples experiences on

this list.

But I tell myself I would not have my gorgeous 21 yr old son if that pg had

progressed to term, and that is my consolation.

I think you should check with your midwife or GP in any case

BUT if you are RH- then you definitely need to as you will need

a Anti-D injection and there is a time limit on that. IIRC 5 days but

I maybe wrong.

Trisha

I am beginning to wonder if my RH Neg is causing my problem

as I think I had a few undiagnosed m/cs before having the boys -

they are both Rh-neg as well so I didn't have anti-D. It was only

with the first d and c that I had my first injection - I wasn't given

one with the 6 week bleeding m/c as they said that they didn't do

them before 10 weeks..all very confusing. Hopefully the clinic will

be able to answer these questions when I get an appointment.

Incidentally I chose to have a D and C this time as I didn't want

the unpredictability of waiting to bleed. the worst part is that I had

had no bleeding at all this time, so I was feeling so confident that

everything was okay

I was for the successful pregs - and I didn't show antibodies.

They have taken blood for the clinic to look at which includes

antibody check so hopefully this will show it up. I was given

anti-D as a precaution this time and last years D and C as well.
