Cora,

Our son is 13 and has had his aides since he was about 7 (or is it 8? I

forget). Since the very beginning, when we travel Ian takes along a little box

that snaps shut. In it he carries extra batteries, the extra ear hooks and the

little tools he uses to clean and care for the aides. The little box goes into

his suitcase and a pack of extra batteries goes into my purse. I've gotten

into the habit of always carry extra batteries in my purse because sometimes

they just die for no reason and he doesn't awlk around with extra.

The batteries last about a week because Ian uses an FM device in school

every day. During the summer, without the FM his batteries last about 2 weeks.

We've never had any issues when traveling except that when Ian dozes off, he

has a habit of taking out his aides. It's quieter and they sqeal when his

head rests against anything. Unfortunately he tends to stuff them into his

pockets and once or twice we've been on our hands and knees searching, usually

finding the aide stuck between seat cushions.

So, now when he takes them out he is to hand them to ME to be put into my

purse. He doesn't like it because he's use to taking care of them himself, but

I'm tired of playing " find the hearing aide. " I've taken to refering to his

aides as his $3,000 dollar earrings. You'd never stuff $3K worth of earrings

into a pocket -- he got the point. I put the aides into a little zipper

pocket on the side of my purse where they are safe until he is awake and needs

them.

Cora-

I was just wondering what type of loss your son has? Our daughter - almost 4

months has mild-moderate loss but doesn't have her aids yet. The Audiologist

wants to do some more tests to be sure. I was just curious what loss your son

had... I am wondering if we are waiting too long to get our daugther hearing

aids. Thanks.

Hello,

This is Cora. I recently joined the group. My son is 9 weeks old and will get

his hearing aids on Monday. I was writing to see if anyone might have some

suggestions for me.

We will be traveling on a plane a week after he gets them, for any reason should

traveling on the plane be any concern for me? Anything I need to buy extra for

the aids? Since I will be traveling, I do not want to need something and not

know where to get it :-) How often do the batteries need to be changed? I have

so many questions, and I know I will learn as I go.

It is wonderful that he will be able to get his aids and be able to hear better

than now. I am so happy for him. I Still feeling like I wish he did not need

them at all...but grateful we found out so early and can get the aids at such a

young age.

Have a great weekend!

Thank you for the advice about the windows.

I am going in the morning to get the aids and love all the advice I

got from everyone from this group. Thank you so much. It is

wonderful to have people to talk to on this journey. I feel so bad,

but sometimes I feel like I will wake up and this all will pass...he

will not need the aids. I grew up and lived my whole life with many

deaf friends too, I was an interpreter for 4 years at a local Univ.

before moving to California.... But there is a difference between

loving the deaf community and.... Hearing your baby has a hearing

loss.... But, I Thank God that a hearing loss is all we are facing.

At least, that is all we know about at this time.

Thank you again everyone. I appreciate your help. :-)

Wow thats a tough call. I guess there is no right or wrong answer here. Do what you feel in your heart is the best thing to do.

Personally if it were me I would probably tell my other sister so she is aware that she is at a high risk for getting breast cancer herself. If you do tell her do you think she could keep it quiet and not let your sister with the breast cancer know that you told her? I will keep you in my prayers that you make the right decision.
