Guest guest
Why would the South Beach Diet have/back food with their name and logo if it is not SBD friendly? Heck, even the ones that arelabeled with the SBD logo aren't SBD friendly. ;-) Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page
Guest guest
Because Kraft Foods paid Dr. Agatston big money to get the SBD "brand" on their label. Chuck chili? Why would the South Beach Diet have/back food with their name and logo if it is not SBD friendly?

Guest guest
> I did read the labels and everything i have found so far > goes with the diet Hmmmmm...may I suggest you read them again? The original premise of the SBD, and why it works so well, is that it encourages the consumption of fresh, wholesome foods. That means foods without all the added junk that the food industry puts in products. One of the biggest buzzes in the SBD is added sugar. If there's one thing the book and literature emphasizes over and over, it's to stay away from added sugar. Second to that is enriched flour followed very closely by saturated fat. Throughout the literature, LOW fat is also strongly encouraged and FAT-FREE even crops up from time to time. The only standard that isn't flying in the SBD camp is low sodium (which makes no sense since this was supposed to be a heart healthy diet -- go figure). Let's look at the ingredient label from some of the new products.... ****************************************************************** One of the frozen entrees -- Beef with Asian Style Noodles (Phase 2/3).... Remember -- the USRDA is 2,400mg and that's already high. One of these frozen dinners has 1,000mg or more all by its lonesome as do the pizzas. 2) They're jammed packed with preservatives and other synthetic additives -- a trademark of processed foods. 3) They have fiber but the amounts are not consistent with what's actually IN the meals. In other words, they've been " enriched " . 4) The portions are small. That means one will not be enough to fill-up the average person, let alone the average dieter who commonly overeats, and since the SBD says to eat until you're full.... 5) All of the products have added sugar in some form or another. Two other things worthy of note -- for the duration, Agatston has said that the Atkins product line was no good and SBDers should stay away from them. However, the Atkins morning bar is more SBD friendly than the SBD breakfast bar which, BTW, was already on the market long before SBD but under a different product name. That's the second thing worthy of note -- the breakfast bars were previously not allowed when they were the other product but now all of a sudden they're a-ok since they have a new wrapper, name, and logo...? When you compare the SBD meals with other " diet " meals on the market (like Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, etc) there's very little difference. Again, these pre-packaged meals have always been strongly discouraged on the SBD. Agatston has been question about putting his moniker on this product line and he defends his position saying that he wants to reach out to as many folks as he can and this will help him reach out to even more people than ever. (Duh -- that means more customers and more $$$ for him.) Eventually, he started saying that these foods should NOT be used as staples in the diet but rather as an " on occasion " sort of thing for when you're on the go, forgot to make something up the night before, and just have to grab something quick. The problem is that this will be the case with most folks most of the time. You can see just from the messages on groups like this one -- everyone is too busy for prepping, cooking, and so forth. It's the nature of our society -- we run at mach 10 and meals have become an inconvenience that we push off to spend as little time on as is possible. Well, good nutrition just doesn't come with convenience. It takes a little time investment to eat healthy. Like I've said before -- good nutrition just doesn't come in a box or can. A lot of folks really like the convenience of these products and they're being used. There are some who use them daily -- I've seen folks on the groups talk about eating the breakfast bars every morning, the snack bars each day, and/or the meals on a daily basis (usually for lunch). The topic is a hotly debated one on the groups and forums. That doesn't change the fact that they are not SBD friendly nor are they healthy. That's why I'll always recommend against using them. Take it FWIW. We all do what we feel is best and to each his/her own.
